I made an uninformed "too good to be true" purchase of a new Weaver scope on eBay for <$50 with the thought I was getting a bargain and that it was a 'real' Weaver scope. It is not. It came in a generic white box and (surprise) was made in China. It feels like all of the other $20 fla market scopes I've taken off of used guns and thrown away. What a bummer.

So here's the question: has Weaver actually squandered their good name by putting it on garbage products, or is this a knockoff? I'm leaning toward the former because I can search for the model number (849992) and find it for sale a couple of other places.

There is no equivalent model number on the Weaver site.  Ever place I find this model number, it is in the $40.00 range… doesn't mean Weaver does or does not condone it.  It is a shame, if it is truly a piece of junk, that Weaver would be associated.

Hate it for you, there are very sorry people selling things on E-Bay just as in life in general. The Chinese are notorious for knock off crap and there are people who will push it as the real McCoy.

File a grievence with Ebay to get your money back and the seller kicked off of Ebay.  You'll be whole and the seller will be out of commission for a while until he figures out another way to get back on Ebay.

If I get the chance I will call Weaver this week and ask them if they actually authorized this scope. If not I will file for a refund. If yes I will offer it as one more reason for not bidding on stuff without checking it out first.

Could be worse. It's only $40 either way.

FWIW, Weaver does have a model scope called the KASPA that is made in China.  While I own a few Weaver scopes (all Super Slams), don't own a Kaspa.  Have viewed thru one at a local gun store and glass in it seemed pretty good to me.  Twisted the turrets on it and felt good too.   If it'd been a  higher than a 16X may have bought it.  Ones I saw in the LGS,  certainly did not come in a white box.  Also, recall a comment or two from a Kaspa owner on another gun forum that was positive about the Kaspa they'd bought.

From Weaver customer service:

That scope is a close out entry level scope as you can tell by the price with a 1 year limited warranty. Must have receipt for warranty.

Thanks for your inquiry

I used a Tasco Silver Antler several hears ago to miss a wall-hanger of a Mississippi white tail.  I zeroed at 9X, fired at 3X at a deer about 100 yards away.  Clean miss.

Took the gun back to the range, set it in a sled, set scope on 9X, fired, dead bull.  Watched as I adjusted the magnification, and watched the crosshairs drift up and left. Badly.

This was the same scope that when I adjusted "down" on the turret, the horizontal went down (bullet strike went up), when I adjusted left on the turret, vertical went left (pushing the bullet right.)

I placed a 'placeholder' bid on the scope under the assumption it had just started with a low opening bid and with the expectation I would be outbid fairly quickly. And under the assumption it was a 'real' Weaver scope.

Jokes's on me.
