Ok,
So I'm looking for a scope for my 18" SPRish rifle.  I have a $200 amazon gift card, so I figure I can spend up to $400 out of pocket.  I currently only have access to a 200 yard range.  I'm looking at a Vortex HST 4-16, SWFA SS 3-15, or a Bushnell Elite Mil Dot 2.5-16.  Thoughts?

Your choices are not bad... I would go with the SS 3-15 from those 3.  Do you intend to hunt with it? just paper at 200?  If you don't expect, in a very short timeframe, to go beyond 200 yards, why not a 10xSS?  The 10x will save you some money and give you all the "range" you need for some future expansion... 6x would as well.

I'm all about as much magnification as I can get... I like it.  But, if you are limited to 200 yards, it is kind of superfluous.  Not trying to talk you out of it, just suggesting some options.  The 3-15 is a really fine scope and would certainly meet all your needs for quite a long time.

I'd go with the SS 3-15x42 of the 3. It's a First focal plane scope, where the other 2 I'm pretty sure are second focal plane scopes.
I would also recommend the SWFA SS 3-9x42. I have both the 3-15 and the 3-9 SS scopes, and I believe I actually prefer the 3-9 over the 3-15. I don't have to mess with a parallax adjustment on the 3-9, and for 200yds parallax shouldn't be that much of an issue.
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

No experience with that Vortex or that Bushnell, but I have experience with both companies.  Between the 2, I'd lean toward the Vortex, if only for responsiveness when/if there is a problem.

Of the 3, SS for sure.  I too own the 3-15 and the 3-9, great scopes, great company backing them.  And, as said above, I tend to prefer the 3-9, especially for applications inside 200 yards.  The 3-15 reticle gets really thin at 3X.  The 3-9 is a better range for usability of the reticle throughout the magnification range. I think.

I just re-read your post: given the financial limitations, you are going to eat up every penny on scope, and have nothing left for mounts.  Have you considered how you will be mounting the scope, whichever you get?

Well, the SS is out of the running now.  When they put it on their Amazon store, they raised the price to $839...out of budget for me.

How is the Sightron SIII 3.5-10x44?  What about Burris MTAC 4.5-14?

Sorry I didn't clarify.  I'm buying off of Amazon (I have a $200 gift card...so that can help offset the price), and the one in the Amazon store is listed at $839.  I didn't realize there would be that much of a discrepancy in price.  I emailed Dillon, and they said they were going to look into bringing the price down.  I'm just waiting on a reply.
