My wife soon will purchase a suppressor for her GSG 1911 chambered for 22lr. She has been doing some internet research and asked me the difference between rimfire and centerfire and we discussed that. Two days later she asked me if there are both rimfire and centerfire 22 caliber and we discussed that.
So I do agree that caliber can be pretty generic, but if you talk about a certain cartridge that is more specific. Looking at one of the internet ammo sellers they have listed 22lr, 220 Swift, 222 Remington, 22 Hornet, 223 Remington, and 22-250. I would say those are all 22 caliber, but they certainly are different cartridges. They also have 308 Winchester, 308 Marlin Express, and 7.62 which would all be the same caliber, but not the same cartridge. The magazine - clip thing kind of bugs me. Magazines are magazines and clips are clips.

It is indeed nomenclature, and the fact that different people use different terms - and sometimes use the wrong term - only complicates it more.
My 300Blackout uses .308 diameter bullets, as does my 308Win (marked "7.62Nato") and my 300WinMag. If I had a 300 UltraMag, it too would use the same diameter bullet. However, when I say 308Win, you know exactly what I am talking about, it has a SAAMI spec and the manufactured ammo falls (generally speaking) within that spec. The same is true of my 300 Winchester Magnum. That the bullets are the same does not interfere with the naming convention much, it is simply that the naming convention has been standardized. A .38 and a .357 shoot the same diameter bullet, but they ain't the same! |

There is nothing "trivial" in trying to define a common set of terms from which to communicate. If the meaning of a term is different for me from what you intend, we CANNOT, in fact, communicate. That is a major problem throughout the world... some people take a trivial approach to important issues. Trivializing the means of communication eliminates the possibility. |
