A couple big bulls. I took these photos last week while passing by 2 different game ranches, both not far from my house.

...And more elk from yesterday. One of these bulls is the same one as in the pics above. The light was getting dim, so I had to bump ISO up to 3200 for these shots.

Yes, my 300 f/4 D with the TC1.4 teleconverter = 420mm focal length.

With the tele attached, max aperture is reduced to f/5.6 wide open, and that lens doesn't VR. As a result, since the last bunch was taken about 15 min before dusk and the shots were hand-held, I had to crank ISO up to get decent shutter speed to keep them acceptably sharp. Because of the high ISO, I had to remove a bit of noise in post, which reduced sharpness a bit.

I used my Nikon 300mm focal length lens, which has an f/4 max aperture. It is the older D style, so it doesn't have "Vibration Reduction" like most current Nikon telephoto lenses have. This means you have to either use a tripod, rock solid handholding technique, or pretty fast shutter speed or you will get soft images from motion blur, if your shutter speed is too slow. I have Nikon's TC1.4 teleconverter (or extender) attached to it, which increases magnification by a factor of 1.4X. This means instead of 300mm, it becomes a 420mm focal length lens with the teleconverter attached. 420mm roughly equates to 8.5X magnification. As you know with any optic, as magnification increases, it becomes harder to steady the "view" through the optic. Camera lenses are no exception; as focal length increases, if you don't have a corresponding increase in shutter speed to freeze motion, you get soft images.

I took those last 10 photos right before dusk, so light levels were low. This means that shutter speed has to be decreased (shutter open longer duration) to get proper exposure (enough light to the camera's sensor), which makes it even more difficult to get tack sharp images with a 420mm lens with no vibration reduction feature. Plus, even if you are able to hold the camera rock steady, the animals don't stand still and pose like a statue for you. Since the teleconverter adds to the lens' focal length, it no longer has an f/4 max aperture, and instead, with the 1.4X teleconverter attached, its max aperture is reduced to f/5.6. This happens because the focal length increases without a corresponding increase in aperture size, and the "f-stop" number is the denominator in a fraction where the focal length is the numerator (in other words, f = focal length/aperture diameter). This means 1 more stop of light loss, another factor slowing down the shutter speed, making it even more difficult to steady the camera to get sharp images.

So, since I can't increase the aperture to let in more light, my only recourse for getting proper exposure and speeding up shutter speed to freeze motion is to increase the camera's ISO sensitivity, which means it requires less light to get a good exposure. If you recall the film camera days, film "speed" was rated by ASA numbers. The higher the number, the faster the exposure/more sensitive the film. The digital sensor sensitivity settings (ISO sensitivity number) is the same thing as film speed in the digital world. The negative tradeoff to increasing the ISO sensitivity is, beyond a certain point, if you increase sensitivity, you also increase digital "noise" (random off-colored pixels) in the image that reduces resolution. You can remove much of this noise to an extent in post-processing with today's software, which is exactly what I had to do, because I had to crank ISO up to 3200 to get my shutter speed reasonably fast enough to get a reasonably sharp image, but those pics still turned out a little soft.

If I had VR on that lens, it allows you to get by with a much slower shutter speed and still get a sharp image. And Nikon provides a 300mm lens with VR... however, it's over 3X more expensive, largely because it also has a wider max aperture (f/2.8), and the monstrous price tag of that lens is why I don't own it. Luckily, Nikon is introducing a VR version of the 300 f/4 within the next couple months, which I will replace my existing 300 f/4 lens with as soon as it's available.

Sorry for the lengthy post. Hope this makes sense. It's hard to explain succinctly if you're not familiar with how the "exposure triangle" works.

What I find interesting is the bokeh on this last series.  I can usually spot tc use due to the change that occurs in bokeh when using a tc with a telephoto, but not in these images.  Maybe its just that I'm used to Canons'.
