The price is of course pretty high, but wow.
Tiny, VR, Nanocoat... I am glad I waited on my telephoto needs... Edited by Bitterroot Bulls - January/06/2015 at 08:37 |

Oh, ****!!!!!!!!!
YES!!!!!!! That's exactly what I've been waiting for!!! It has everything -- latest, greatest VR tech, Nano, FL, new electromagnetic aperture control, and unbelievable size and weight! It's freakin' 3 inches shorter and half the weight of the existing 300 f/4! A dream come true! Did you see the MTF chart? Unbelievable resolution! Nikon actually listened to their customer wishes on this lens! Yes, the price is a little high, but really not that bad compared to comparable lenses. I WILL have one! My 300 f/4D will be up for sale the instant this lens is available! Matt, I'll make you a good deal on a 300 f/4D with 1.4 teleconverter... |

Ted, If I was smarter, I would take you up on it! However, I already preordered this gem. Hopefully I am one of the first in line... Now I will start saving for the TC 1.4III Edit, also it doesn't have an FL crystal element, but it does come with that snazzy new Flourine Coating. Kind of amazing set of features for 2K. Canon's DO 400 f4 is like $6K!

Another thing to note is the optional collar is the same as the one for the 70-200 f4 VR, so a person with both lenses can use one on both.
Although at this lens' size, it seems a collar is unnecessary.

I'm super excited about this lens! I saw a size comparison pic of it somewhere recently where it was alongside the legacy 300 f/4 and I can't believe how compact it is!!! Interestingly, it also has a new "sport VR" mode, supposedly optimized for panning, in addition to the standard VR, which is Nikon's latest and greatest VR tech.

Canon put that on their second IS lens, I believe. Let's avoid talking about Nikon vs Canon sensor technology, though.

This lens is remarkable.
The VR is outstanding. Just like the 70-200 f4 Sharp? Uh yes. Braden just missing catching an egg-toss on a snowy MT Easter... So close...

VERY nice shot, Matt!!!
This will be my next lens, and I can't wait to get it. Thanks for the feedback! Even if the IQ was identical to the older 300 f/4 I have, I'd get this lens for VR and its remarkably small form factor alone! Both allow me to do things that are far more difficult to do with my current 300.
