After the hunting season I find myself with a 375 Ruger without a scope. The rifle kicks like a mule with my hunting load (260 gr accubond at 2800 fps). This does not bother me too much but it did bother the scope which is now on its way to the manufacturer for repairs. I use this rifle for hunting Oryx, kudu and Blue wildebeest in other words large antelope at 100 - 350 yds. After reading all the good reports about the SS scopes I am considering the fixed 10x42 (http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-10x42-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope-P499.aspx) as a super rugged hunting scope.
Is this a bad idea and will I be able to take close shots (60 yds) when they occur? I have never seen nor handled one of these scopes which is why I am asking you guys.

In my opinion, 10X is way too much on game at 100-300 yards.
Additionally, I believe SWFA only sells the SS scopes inside the US. I hunted South Africa in 2012, it was an amazing experience; a "kicks like a mule" rifle is definitely an advantage!

Given your environment and circumstances, I would look for a decent 1-6 or fixed 4X.
There are some very good fixed 4x and 6X optics that you should be able to get, and both will serve you much better than a 10X will - at your stated ranges.

I share the opinion that 10x magnification is far too much for game at the stated ranges. That said, I haven't hunted those particular animals, so perhaps all the shooting is prone, from a solid rest, with seemingly-unlimited time to shoot? If so, perhaps 10x would be alright. I don't care for the exposed, non-locking turrets on a hunting rifle, either.

I can get a used Leupold M8 6x42 for a decent price. Will it hold up?

I would rather have the Leupold FX3 either with the long range duplex or with the heavy duplex. The glass is much improved in the FX3 over previous generations. The fixed powers should hold up better than most variables. IOR Valdada also makes a very nice 4x and 6x fixed with superb glass.
