Thought I would share what we made out with. This is the first year at raising bees and the outcome was not bad. We would have had more, but one of the hives were robbed. Next year should be better. Fingers crossed. Big Grin

I'll take one with the comb in it Steph, looks great.

Do you mean someone drove away with a hive?

Hope they got their butt stung!!!

That's a good one. I never knew that bees steal honey from other bees.

Don't you know how to recognize your own bees from robber bees?

How many hives do you have?
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

Unfortunately they do. It's done due to drought, or a weak hive. They normally rob right around fall. Whatever

We started them for several reasons. Our garden, honey and allergies. Local honey is the best thing for allergies. Big Grin

I use local honey in my coffee every morning instead of cream and sugar.  Don't like it any other way now

Cool!!  Raising bees.  Can you make pets of them and not wear a big suit?

I have always had good relationships with wasps.  All my life they have landed on me and checked me out...and this year in Grand Prairie, I had a big nest of them out back where I always sit with my computer.  They swirled around, landed on the keyboard, climbed along the top of the screen, landed on me and were my pals....

I've had them land on my reading glasses ( while I was wearing them--I had to take them off and shake them---and then, finally, push him off with my finger ), one landed on my beard and just sat there until I was done typing and i pushed him away....

...they landed on my arms, my fingers, my shirt, etc.....my glass of beer....

PETS!!!

I wonder if bugsNbows can explain this......

Bees from Borneo, the (1931) [Short Story]
by Will H. GrayRating: No votes (Rate!)
Reviews: None (show them) Review!

Summary :

A kind-hearted, generous biologist spends his time raising bees, experimenting with breeding and selectivity to create the most productive bees in the world. Always looking for new and interesting insect combinations, he introduces a strain of bee from Borneo into his hive, increasing production several hundred fold. Delighted, he begins selling the queens from these hives, and only later realizes that they steal honey from other hives, bringing it "home", and thus destroying other farmers' crops.

Appalled, he attempts to refund the beekeepers he has already sold to, and while doing so, a senator takes revenge by cutting off his mail order bee business. Unable to continue refunding, he turns back to experimenting with a vengeance. But even he is not prepared for what results when he combines his bees with a dangerous looking wasp that flies into his work room one hot summer's day.
