What would be a good magnification for Designated Marksman Competitions where you engage targets from 100 to 600 yards as fast as possible. Would 16x be to much for the 100 yard ones and 10x or 12x to little for the 600 yard ones? I am almost 50 so my eyes aren't perfect and would rather error on the side of to much than not enough.

A fixed 10X scope with good glass will be better than a 16X. Good glass trumps magnification every time. Get the SS 10 HD. It is near to perfect for this type of competition.

The 10X and the 16X have the same glass. To me they are above average and better than any others that I have used at the price point. 16X will magnify the equal imperfections more than the 10X. Flat out cut to the chase. What we have is 2 scopes by the same manufacturer. Both are equal in design. The higher magnification scope will increase the imperfections more than the lower magnification scope. No more negative elements are present but they are made more prominent with the increase magnification. I know I am not using the best technical terms. Koshkin can do that best.

12x might be a good compromise

The last one I shot with, I had to use an alternate rifle, wearing a March 3-24X42. I basically never took it off 8X. Only on one stage did I drop it to 3X.

If Koshkin didn't mentally translate his technical findings into English when he reports them I doubt many of us, including me, would have a clue what his findings meant. We could probably speak the word, but that's mainly phonetics; his science has its own vocabulary as do most technical fields.
