    Posted: October/08/2014 at 11:52

I didn't get all the detail's but this scope was mounted on a Savage bolt action with a Millett picatinny base and our SS TAC rings. Customer said he took it to a gun smith to have it mounted. He then took it to the range and on the first shot the screw from the base shot out and into the scope. It had enough force that it almost went out the other side of the scope.Shocked

The rifle was new in the box. Customer said he thinks the gunsmith had to drill something out in the front screw hole. The screw is still inside the scope and you can see the threads are perfectly intact (jiggling the scope around until it is laying on the lens). It looks like the screw was just sitting in the hole and not threaded in.

I pictured a similar screw next to the hole in a picture below for reference.

How the hell did the screw have enough force to do that?  Did he drill the front screw hole into the chamber?

If possible, could I have the name of the smith, I'd like to be sure to avoid that person AT ALL COSTS!

I like Savages and still have one, although I will freely admit that I got a bit snobbish with rifles ever since I got my DTA.

Now that I think about it, the only modern bolt guns I have are DTA, Savage and Tikka.  That kinda makes sense, since I am not a huge fan of Ruger and have too much self-respect to get a Remington.  I do like FNs though.

That having been said, my all time favourite non-bullpup bolt gun is the Mosin-Nagant.  I've got fourteen of those in a variety of configurations.

Anyhow, that is a digression from the original thread and I agree with RC: stay away from that gunsmith.

We gave him a new scope.

He said he was going to go back to that gunsmith to get him to try and fix his gunSad. He said the gun is still functional, and just needs the hole sealed up. Shocked

I told him he would be crazy to go back to him and to contact Savage about have his rifle replaced.

He had to of.  I asked to see the gun or to send me some pics of the gun. He didn't have it with him and I never got any pics.

That's exactly what happened. Note the hole is centered on the underside of the scope tube, at the forward-most end of the main tube, right above where the forward mount base screw is located. The forward-most mount screw is the only one directly above the threaded barrel shank, which is directly above the chamber. If the "gunsmith" drilled completely through the threaded barrel shank while trying to drill out a broken screw, you have an unsupported hole in the top of the chamber with only a thin web of brass holding back 55-60ksi of pressure. When the brass gives way, the pressure treats the small screw like a projectile, easily stripping the threads and driving it up into the scope.

The "gunsmith" that pays so little attention to what he's doing is a danger to himself and anyone that comes in contact with him.

That's the thing. The threads on the screw look to be perfect. Almost like he drilled the hole out too big and the screw was just sitting in the hole.

Would that qualify for an " A " hole? Gunsmith?
