Hi,Using a Swfa 10x42 SS Classic which reticle would be the best for low light and good light conditions (Deer Hunting in open fields 95% of the time,5% in woods).
Ranges out to 700 yards or so. I will be using the reticle for range finding purposes as well. I also have a mil dot master already. So what do yall think,Mil quad or Mil dot ? Thanks BTW I have read on other boards that Chris Farrel was the man that ran Swfa. Is he still the owner operator? |

bcraig, this is just my opinion, but I like the mil quad over the mil dot. The dots tend to cover target area at closer distances, where the quads can be seen through. Also, the quads, being diamonds, are more effective for ranging, as long as you know what the subtensions are. The old dots were the standard for many years, but I think the quads will rapidly gain favor once they get put to use. I have an SS10x42MQ, and once I got used to the quads, and learning the subtensions, ranging is very accurate, as long as you can be fairly close in target size estimation. Practice ranging with varying target sizes of known dimensions to get used to what different sizes look like at measured ranges. Set targets of known size, i.e. 18in.x24in., at varying measured distances, and note what size and how many mils they measure in the reticle. Out at 700-100 yards, small errors in size estimation can result in complete misses with the bullet. Hope this helps. Again, just my opinion. Happy shooting! |

Chris is still around, and still runs the show, unless I am very mistaken.
I like the quad okay, still use mil dots, prefer Christmas tree reticles now. Be aware that accurate ranging on a mil quad or mil dot is a very perishable skill, do it often or you will do it poorly. 10X is a bit much for woods and hunting, critters tend to move at the worst time, and 10X offers little in field of view. |
