I just purchased a CZ550 .22-250 caliber Varmint rifle and am considering one of two scopes.
Leupold 6-18x40 VX-II Riflescope with Long Range Varmint Duplex reticle Burris 6.5-20x50 Fullfield II Rifle Scope with Ballistic Mil-Dot reticle
Both are around the same price. I would appreciate any opinions. I have a Leupold VX-II 3X9 scope on my CZ 550 American .270 and am very happy with it. The Burris looks pretty good but I am not sure about the Ballistic Mil-Dot reticle. Does anybody have any experience with this reticle?
Thanks

Hello
I have a Burris Signature Select 4-16x44 with the Ballistic Mil-Dot and I feel it is a exellent scope and reticle for hunting. In order to use this scope and reticle to its full potential I recomend using it in combination with a Magnum caliber and medium signature rings on a rifle with a hunting taper barrel, this is due to the fact that this scope has only 60 MOA in up/down adjustments. Dont let the MOA's turn you off, that is when the reticle comes into play. This reticle combines the features of two great reticles in one the Mil-Dot and a ballistic holdover recticle that was originally designed for the 222-250 but works well with other calibers especially Magnums. Check out the picture of this set-up on the (bye bye Leupold) post in the riflescope section and check out burrisoptics.com for more info on this reticle. I do not recomend the Fullfield II, it is of inferior quality to the SS but better than VX-II. |

Thanks for your reply. The Model 70 in the picture is beautiful. Is the SS worth the extra $ even though it is a 4X16 vs. 6.5X20 in the Fullfield II?

I shure do, better glass will always have a advantage over slightly higher magnification with inferior glass. Burris has made some very nice improvments on this line compared to the the older Signatures and I feel that it is a great scope for the price. |

I just had my Burris Signature Select 4-16x44 mounted and Bore sighted. Since you have one, how did you adjust the reticle focus?

The Burris has a reticle focus on the eye piece, or ocular lens housing. Or did you mean the proceedure to adjust the reticle? |

If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

I used to own a Fullfield II (3x10 50mm if I remember correctly). Sold it this past Fall to finance a rifle build project. Very good glass quality and tracking was accurate & reliable. I would definitely buy another Fullfield II. I explain this because I also sold a Leupold VX II 3x9 50mm as part of funding this project. It too was a good scope & never gave me a lick of trouble. However, the glass wasn't quite as bright & clear as the Fullfield II. I found that I got about 5 more minutes of hunting time with the Fullfield II over the VX II. You really can't go wrong with either but I seem to recall that I paid about $60 less on the Fullfield II than the Leupold VX II. So, the Burris, in my opinion, is a much better value with a little bit higher quality glass. Best of luck to you. |

Hello
I quickly aim the scope at a blank wall and adjust the reticle as fast as I can making shure I do not look through the scope to long. Then I repeat this process several times until I am satisfied with the reticle image at a glance. I next take it outdoors and do a final check aiming it at the sky several times. The key thing about reticle focus is not to look through the scope to long becuse your eyes will adjust to a reticle that is not focused properly. Hope this helps, good luck. |
