I just got a set of TPS rings in from SWFA today and was going over the instructions. I have never seen a ring designed like this and would not have used these unless I could find the right height. I needed a ring that was between 1.12" and 1.25" in height and the TPS came in @ 1.18".
Anywho, there is an index mark on one side of the ring and one on the cap to match. The side with the index mark is tightened down completely which leaves a gap on the other side and then by torquing the other side snugs the optic in. A ring set designed to have a gap on one side and not the other. I am not sure if this is a good thing or not. Has anyone used these and how are they? I am deff not gonna strap a $3.5k optic into them at least not without lapping the hell out of em if I think there is any chance of marring my scope. |

I have been using only TPS rings for the last couple years, and love this feature. It makes keeping the reticle level during mounting much easier in my experience.
What are your concerns about the design? |

I am currently using a set of their ultra low rings and have had three different scopes (SS3-9, 2.5-10 PST and SS5-20) in them and have not had a problem with ring marks or any other marks on my scopes. I did not lap them, but don't see how it would hurt. Edited by cpwomack - May/08/2014 at 16:35 |

Great rings for the money. I have used probably a half of dozen different sets and never had to lap any of them. Another positive is none of them ever left a mark on any of the scopes being used.

My only gripe with TPS is they don't produce enough of the TSR's.
Vendors are constantly out of them. We used to have a member here that worked for them. TPS_Phil. I used to dog him about that.

That's all good to hear. My concerns? Well different isn't always bad, I always question things that "go against the grain" of what most folks consider the norm. And I do realize "you get what you pay for" doesn't always apply, but I have found it prudent to get as much info as possible before trusting something completely.
There have been a lot of newcomers to the ring makers "ring". And a lot of new designs to boot. I have always used either Badger or Seekins and never had any issues but the thought of marring or at worst deforming a $3500 scopes tube would be enough to make me cry. |

I guess my question wasn't really clear. Sorry. What about the TPS design makes you concerned it would damage your scope? Just that it is different than other rings, or too inexpensive? For the record, I have 5 sets of TPS rings now and none of them have damaged any of my scopes in any way.

TPS is great and makes great products. I couldn't find any 26mm rings anywhere. TPS was out of stock and said it would probably be 3 months before they made any more. I explained my need and they started up the line and made a set JUST FOR ME... No one else would do that... and they charged me the same price... I tried to pay more and they sent my money back. |

WOW no way! They must have stepped up their CS big time cause I read several posts where some were unhappy for one reason or another. My rings seem to go together a little different then any other and the sequence that has to be followed to make them work correctly. Basically follow the instructions carefully or they wont go together without issues. if you try to assemble them like standard rings the screws will go in cross-threaded.
At least they are made in the US |

That's right... FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS... TPS is designed to apply maximum clamping force without damaging the scope body. It's a bit different, but worthwhile. For rings, I value my TPS rings as much as any other mounting system I own. I've quit using Warne and Talley, I have one set of Redfield rings/base I use on Voere Shikar, I have several sets of TPS, Chimera(1 set), a couple of sets of Millet Angle-Loc, and everything else is mount/ring combos. TPS is near and dear to me. The "problems' with TPS... I'll send you a PM. |
