I had really good results with my .300 RUM Sendero using RL 25 and never had any problems with the Swift's you are experiencing.

If I remember right those bullets are long and need to be loaded fairly long in my guns I tried them in.

Well the 2 rules on stabilizing bullets that are keyholing are to shoot them faster or to get a barrel with a faster twist. Since switching out barrels for a 1 in 8 or 1 in 9 is not an easy option, then IMO you need to increase the speed 300RUM's are a b!+@h to load for IME. Seems like you really have to pump them up and there is a very narrow range from not enough to too much Or you could just go to a bullet with a shorter bearing length |

I'm a little confused by your post. This is a Custom rifle, correct? can we get the build spec's? also are you shooting Factory ammo or loading for this rifle? If your loading for it can we have spec's of the loads you are using? I too have a custom 300RUM in a rem 700 action 29inch barrel 1-10 twist. It dose NOT like any factory ammo at all, it hates it. I load for it and it is a tack driving hammer with berger210gr or accubonds 200gr. SO if you will give us a few more details one of the "smarter than me" guys will surly send you in a better direction with this rifle/load.

gun was test fired with Remington corelok 180 gr factory ammo and shot .338 groups the scirocco ammo used is remington factory ammo also,,, I am in the process of handloading ammo I hope this will solve the key holing problem ,,,I got scirroco 180 grain ,,accubond 180gr,,, gameking 180gr, , barnes 168 gr tsx going to try these bullets in the handloads any load data that you have tried would be appreciated for those scirrico 180s I got manuals for the other bullets didn't want to go to the 200 -220 grain bullets for deer |

Actually IMO you would find the heavier 200 gr Accubond kinder and more effective on deer than a lighter bullet. When I say kinder I mean less ... explosive for lack of a better word. The 168 TSX has a propensity to pencil if driven super fast at close range. The Scirrocco II 180 would be a good bullet and not come apart but they are very sensitive to seating depth, if you get it right they are primo. GameKings may not exit and will come apart and call me prejudiced, but I am not into the Berger-making splatter bullets. To me if you want to shoot a 168 or 180 gr bullet, get a 30-06 |

really why is that?? ive had nothing but great success shooting 180gr bullets out of all 3 300's ive had over the years ( .300 win, .300wsm .300wby) to me the 30-06 was born to shoot 150-165's. |

To me if you want to shoot a 150 or 168 gr bullet, get a 280 rem (could have said 270 knowing how much you love those) |

the .280 was born to shoot the 140's as the .270 was born to shoot the 130's.

of5 welcome to OT... You might eliminate your problem by merely loading them yourself (correctly.) I had some hyper velocity Federal 180s that weren't keyholing but were stunningly inaccurate. I'd agree that faster usually works, but have to ask- did the
keyhole stabilize past 100 yds? They sometimes do and indicate too fast a twist for velocity, which means slower might work... The opposite
phenomenon is to start keyholing at distance. Big cases can be tricky to find the right powder charge... don't even
think about loading below minimum charge weight in manual. Probably
wouldn't go near minimum. Have you fiddled with seating depth? I know you want to
make those Sciroccos work... looks like you are going in the right direction with some of your choices. alternate tries... 200 gr A- frame or
the 180 or 200 gr Accubond or 180 Interbond? I'd really stay away from Game Kings (or any non- bonded boattails) unless your shots will be at distance, say 400 yds minimum
Ps Sakomoto- Yes, .30-06 is the right choice... that's what you meant, isn't it? |
