Hello, Recently purchased a Sako TRG 42 chambered for the 338 Lapua mag. I have been looking at Swarovskis 10x42 tactical scope. Does anyone have any experiance with either the scope or the rifle? Most shooting will take place between 300-400yds.

The Swarovski was built for Barrett 50's and will handle the Lapua with ease. Being a fixed power scope it will be brighter and more durable than a variable, only downside is the obvious (only 10x). The Swarovski scopes can only be bought from Barrett or us and the price of $799.95 is a steal. The Swarovski utilizes a coil spring to hold the reticle, has a recoiling eye piece in case the Lapua kisses ya and has full blown target style windage and elevation knobs.

Thanks Chris,
I believe this is the scope that will do the trick. Could you suggest a mount and a set of rings that would fit the Sako TRG 42. Unfortunately the QD that is sold by the factory is not only VERY expensive it also has limitations serious to not consider purchaseing. The rings in your photo look very impressive. What are they? And do you carry them? I have to tell you that your company has the finest web sight on the www. The choices, description etc. are excellent. I have been to a lot of them. Keep up the good work. |

The rings in the picture are Barrett 50 cal rings that we do not carry. I would go with the factory mount. That is a super nice gun and a super nice scope, don't mess up the package with some off brand mount.

I agree that the swarovski is a great scope, but accuracy international chose S&B to outfit their specialized sniper rifles. as did the british, finnish and many other sniper teams. S&B's do see alot of action all over the world. I would say only leupold Mark IV's see more action, maybe unertl's if your talking only U.S. sniping teams. S&B makes a scope for 50 cal as well if your shooting 50 cal's. I asked S&B how much brighter a fixed power scope would be due to the lower amount of lenses. they told me that the 1-2% of extra light transmission would not be visinle to the human eye/ If you go to snipershide.com or sniperparadise.com, you can read about people who own multiple tactical scopes and shoot all the time. I have yet to read a negative review about PM II's. I have yet to rean anything about a swarovski tactical scope,, for some reason, they arent as popular. maybe they dont market themselves to that market enough??????? |

Swarovski and Zeiss both offer excellent sniper scopes that are used quite extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. There are very few Unertl/U.S. Optics scopes used due to cost, U.S. Marine Corp snipers are the only major force that I know of that use them and there really is not all that many scout/sniper teams in the Marine Corp. Leupold is well represented because of the U.S. Army's adoption. Night Force has also made inroads with the U.S. military. I think that there are probably more Zeiss Hensoldt sniper scopes in military hands around the world than any other brand. In overall nubers there are relatively few S&Bs in use. S&B is a great scope, but as Chris said in another thread, they are a small company with a very expensive product offering.

I do like the S&B scopes and I do appreciate the need for superior optics but there is also the financial factor that needs consideration. As ranburr said, Shmidt and Bender is a smaller company with some very expensive scopes. I always wonder if the cost of "superior" quality justifies the sometimes superior price. I am greatful for all your info, thank you. I'll give it some more thought. But you can bet whatever the choice. I'll be getting it from SWFA. |

Get your hands on a recent copy of Jane's Infantry Weapons and you will see what guns and optics are being used country by country. Leupold is primarily a US forces scope with the Army and Navy, Unertl for USMC, West Euro countries use a mix of Zeiss, S&B, and Hendsoldt scopes, East Euro (former USSR republics) use former Soviet inventory and are now starting to branch out with their own domestic products (like the CZ bolt action sniper rifles using a chassis system like AI).

Hensoldt is Zeiss. Here is the "Order Of Battle" in me from my military days; Jane's does a good job of telling you what the official latest and greatest issue is. That does not always translate into what is really in use on the ground. This is especially true in the third world and former Soviet Republics. And most all of western europe does have a standard sniper scope which is supplemented by every other brand of European scope that you can imagine. The U.S. military also supplements different brands of sniper scopes, though the standard for the Army is Leupold. The new Unertl's are actually U.S. Optics scopes. If I remember correctly the two companies had a big falling out in court and U.S. Optics has cut Unertl out as the middle man and they sell direct to the Marine Corps.

I am sure you have read the posts on the Zeiss Tactical Scope in the other topic. One quick point you may be interested in was that they chose a SAKO TRG to mount the scope on for the review in Gun World. They say that Zeiss offer two choices of BDC cams, one for 308 match 168 grain and one for the 338 Lapua. Thought you might be interested in the 338 cam.

Nope. Brand new. This rifle typically retails between $2,300 and $2,400. MSR (which is always wishful thinking on the part of the manufacturer) is $2,829. Where you get soaked is in buying the goodies that make it perform and look great. The muzzle brake which definetly makes shooting the 338Lapua mag more enjoyable, cost me $214.00. The scope mount (minus rings) will cost another $300.00. And if you really have to have a backup magazine, that's gonna' run you around $200.00. You don't even want to price Sakos bi-pod. I reload my own cartridges so it only costs me $2.04 every time I pull that lovely two-stage trigger. If I didn't it would run around $6.00 a pop.
You will like the Steyer but if you really have your heart set on a Sako just check around. |
