I'm looking at Vortex PST scopes right now. One for a 6.5 Grendel build, maybe a 2nd for a 243 bolt gun. I will predator some hunt with both, and do some range work also. No competition or real long range at this time, but I would like to become proficient out to possibly 500 yds. I would like to try using the reticle for some ranging and holdover work. I naturally think in terms of inches, yards, feet etc and have read that will lend itself to MOA based reticle calculations. Of course, Mil based systems are more popular. I'm inclined to go MOA/MOA, any suggestions? |

It's personal preference. Both systems are based on angular measurements, so it's not an "imperial vs. metric" decision, its a degrees vs. radians decision. Though shooters will prefer one over the other, neither is really superior to the other. The only reason you think of MOA as an Imperial "inches/yds/ft" type measurement is because 1MOA happens to be very close to an inch at 100 yds. 1MIL (milliradian) = 3.44 MOA or 3.6" @ 100 yds, 18" @ 500, 36" @ 1000, etc. With the many good ballistic apps available for smart phone, you don't even have to do the math in your head anymore.

It did occur to me that mils equating to units of 18" and accordingly yards would be handy.

Working with either is going to real confusing if you try and think in linear measurments. If going with mil, or minute of angle, your measuring tape is the reticle in the scope. The reticle will tell you exactly what the correction you need to dial or hold...

^^^ perzacktly!
Being more "coarse," the mil system is a little faster to dial in LR dope than the MOA system too. Because MILs are coarser than MOAs, this is why MIL dials are divided in 10th's of a MIL. |
