I am budgeting for a new rifle project.  I am putting together a savage in 7mm-08.  I plan on hunting with this rifle and shooting out to about 1300-1400 M.  I am considering the SS 5x20 and the IOR Valdada 3 x 18.  My scope budget is around $1500, I will be doing extra work to save.  I am starting with the scope first on this project.  I have really enjoyed my old SS 10X.  Your advice is appreciated.

Answers to this should be interesting.
I have owned both scopes, eventually sold both for different reasons.

Were I setting up a similar gun for similar purposes, I would take the 5-20 over the IOR - all due to personal experiences with both.

I do like the mp8 reticle more than the mil quad, and ior's glass is slightly better than the 5-20 (to my eyes) but when they fail, they fail bigtime. For me, it comes down to confidence -in scope and maker - and I have that confidence in SWFA, and only occasionally in IOR.

seems like a 2-gun situation to me..... unless you plan on 1000 yard shots at animals.   I'll pause to let that sink-in......

if your hunting shots are going to be anywhere around 100 M or less... I personnally wouldn't want 5x to be the lowest setting.
take em!

You can't stand IOR. we have had this discussion before in person. I remember.

While I share similar views with Tip, I personally do not like the added bulk that is associated with IOR. You have limited space for ring spacing and while optically they are very good, I personally would rely heavily on the SS over IOR.

^^^^Agree with this wholeheartedly.

Usually, "do it all" rigs don't do any one thing very well. I'd get one rifle optimized for hunting and save up and buy another optimized for LR shooting... or vice-versa. Then, again, I'm not a one rifle kinda guy.

Oh, between those 2 scopes, I'd go with the SS as well... for the LR role, but not for an all around hunting rifle, where I'd prefer a much lighter, more compact scope with less low end magnification.

Tough question,I've owened both in the past also as did RC.I like the glass on the IOR better but only by a hair but mechanically & reliably I would take the SS anyday over the IOR...........

Ok, I'll be the odd ball here.

I like IOR scopes, but I like SS scopes too. I think they both have great glass. Between the two, if I was going to use this scope for hunting, I would go with the 3-18 IOR. It has a low enough power for hunting and high enough for long range targets. I've found that too much power can be a handicap in a lot of hunting situations.

I will say that IORs are heavy IMHO, so you may want to look at the SS 3-15x42 as well.

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

My 3-18 IOR (FFP) tunneled quite a bit, it wasn't an actual 3X (well, I guess it was 3X, but the field of view suffered, as tunneling tubes do); that was a big point against for me.  The image was actually about 4.5-5X, which would negate any "lower magnification" advantage over a scope with a 5X bottom end (that doesn't tunnel.)

He could always get March 3-24x42 or 3-24x52....

Yes, he could indeed, and that wouldn't suck!Big Grin

But then if his discretionary budget looks anything like the average shooter's, he'd then be eating Ramen noodles for dinner for the next 6 months.

How about a Leupold VX-6 3-18? Would be a good choice IMO.

As far as hunting goes, it's really hard to beat a Leupold scope for the money.

I like the suggestion on the March, Ilya.  Now I only have to convince my wife the mortgage payments mysteriously disappeared. Loco I used to hunt with a Steyr SSG-69.  The iron sights took care of hunting needs. My son now uses it.   Maybe you and others can push Chris and company to make the 3-15 with HD glass.  I think that might fit the bill.  Thanks to everyone for your advice, I am sure there may be more posts for me to consider.

Another vote for the SS. I am not a fan of the IOR scopes. Their CS is it seems is a hit or miss.
