New member here.  Been lurking for a while and it seems like a great informative site.

I am 63 y/o and relative new to guns but wanting to learn to shoot and teach my grandkids the
proper way.

I know absolute nothing about scopes and just purchased my first rifle.  It is a Tikka T3 lite in .223 caliber.  I do not hunt (yet?) so it will strictly limited to occasional trips to the range.  Being a newbie that is where I belong anyway.

Here in the rolling hills of southern Indiana I think most ranges are 100 yards, a few 200 yards.
I do have a couple friends where I might be able to stretch out to 300 yards but it is not really convenient.

I am really interested in what "specs" would I need in a scope to fit my parameter?  I dont really have a budget.  But I will toss out $300 to start the conversation.  If I can spend $200 my bank account will thank you.  I f I really need to spend more so be it.

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

WSB

I think a good old 3X9 would do for you, westside.  There are a lot of reasonable 3X9s here at SWFA.
A Redfield 3X9 is $209, I think....also, the Weaver 3X9 under $200.

You won't need a Hubble Telescope.

Yes. A good 3-9 is pretty easy to find in your price range. The Vortex Diamondback and Bushnell Elite would aso be good choices. I would lean toward the Elite as it is IMO the best sub $300 3-9 out there.
We measure it with a micrometer, mark it with a crayon, and cut it with a chainsaw.

The Tikka is a nice rifle my son has one in .223 they come usually with the 1 in 8 twist barrel and there will be a number 8 stamped on the barrel those are better for heavier bullets  60 gr 69 gr 75 gr 77gr.
He has a bushnell elite 6 to 24power scope on his. If I had to be in the $300 range I would put the fixed 16 power Super Sniper on the rifle.  This is a great target scope but a high power fixed power scope is challenging to use for hunting but it can be done from a fixed position with a solid rest and for varmits or prairie dogs could work well but probably too much for coyotes. The .223 is a bit light for a deer rifle it will kill them but some stated dont allow big game hunting with smaller than a .243.

If I was going to buy one all around hunting and target use scope - I would pick the Zeiss scope because Im 57 and I appreciate the quality of the glass and like the top end of the magnification to be at least 14x and several of my rifles have 5-20 power scopes on them.

On the cheaper end my vote would go towards a Vortex Diamondback in either 3-9x40 or 4-12x40. To step it up a bit the Zeiss Terra or Leupold VX-3 in the power of your choice are also pretty good options.
