I would love to go red stag hunting, and I will do so sometime before I die. Not that way, though.

When I do it, I will travel to New Zealand, Patagonia... some place like that, and hunt them in their natural habitat.

Beautiful animal.

How would it be hunted: enclosure or free range?

They would move him out a couple of days before the hunt you would want to spot and stalk this guy.

And I'm dead serious when I say I plan to make that dream a reality sooner rather than later.

Anybody else interested in such a trip?

...I mean seriously, not just talking about it.

Hunting in New Zealand for red stag is without a doubt my "dream hunt," only slightly edging out hunting in Alaska, doing a moose hunt, or going after a big bull elk in a limited draw, high trophy quality area somewhere.

I'm giving serious thought to doing it as early as possibly next year; certainly within the next 5 years, and I've been doing some research on the various outfitters. If anyone here would be interested in going with me and isn't just paying lip service to it only to back out on me at the last minute, let me know.

Alaska is mine. But not just Moose, I would love to go up there for two weks and do a Grizzly, Big Horn, and Moose hunt.

...even though I realize they aren't native to NZ. However, they were introduced there sometime in the 1850's or 60's, so for all intents and purposes, they've been there so long and adapted so well, they might as well be.

It's looking like it will cost in the neighborhood of $15K, to go with a good outfitter... not counting airfare and taxidermy.

You'll love it Ted, was one of the great experiences of my life.  Bow hunted with my SIL in Fiordland National Park.  Only had a couple of days, didn't harvest one but the scenery was worth the trip alone.  Very rugged area where we were hunting made me wish I was about 30 years younger.  Your outfitter will give you the details but like all mountain area hunting had a wide variance in weather. Some of the plant life was a real bitch, the spaniard grass and gorse makes you pay attention and the spaniard grass will test your footwear if you accidentally kick one.  Take along a fly rod as well if you can fit it in.  Lots of beautiful rivers and almost no-one around.

Thanks for the feedback, Craig! I remember you telling me about going to NZ a few years ago.

From what I've seen from pics, New Zealand is definitely a stunningly beautiful country! My late parents went to NZ years ago and they told me if they could live anywhere else on the planet besides the US, New Zealand would be the place.

I'm in agreement with your parents Ted!  What a paradise for hunters and fishermen.
