Hey guys,
I posted a while back about what scope around my $1000 budget was the best. You all pretty much sold me on the SWFA 1-6 and I am super excited to try it out. However! I think I'm going to have just a bit more to spend ($250-500). So my question is: Should I hold out for something that is a bit better than the SWFA 1-6, or should I just stick to my original plan? - It will be going on a 308. - I want 1.5x at the most (low end) and 6x at the least (high end) - I much prefer FFP - I want to stick with Mil reticles and knobs The other option I was considering was the US Optics 1.5-6. I looked at the Vortex Razor HD Gen 2 but I do not like the reticle design. Any help would be appreciated! I should be ready to pull the trigger on this purchase by May. |

If your budget has changed enough to jump into the US Optics line has it increased enough to go to this scope?

In the price range it will be tough to beat the SS without adding a grand. It is that good.

I have run the USO 1.5-6, it wasn't my favorite scope. Of the 2, I'd go with the SS. The USO 1.8-10 is awesome, but if it is too much, it is too much.
I have no experience with the Vortex HD scopes.

Just my opinion, based upon hands on experience. There is no reason, to spend more money on the US Optics 1.5-6 over the SS 1-6.
If you are going for the 1-8, I can see spending more for the extra upper end, but not basically double… it doesn't gain you that much. I've not yet been able to get my hands on the 1.8-10… guy I was going to borrow one from had to unexpectedly deploy and left without me being able to get with him to try out the scope. However, he has high praise for it… but it is high dollar, too. The SS 1-6 on 308 will let most users realize full advantage of the rifle's capabilities. The reticle is excellent, the mechanicals are outstanding, on the proper rifle, you can drive tacks with it (or take it off the rifle and drive nails with it, put it back on and still drive tacks). Now, I'm one who has never let minimum requirements get in my way. If you WANT and think you may need the 1.8 - 10, by all means, get it. However the SS 1-6 will serve all the needs of a 308 shooter unless you have situations where you truly NEED higher power magnification. Most people don't really need it, they just want it… and there is nothing wrong with that…. but you have to choose the level of pain you are willing to endure in the dollars category. If you are limited to $1500, get the SS 1-6 and use the extra money for rifle upgrades and ammo. I really like the SS1-6 and it is probably what I'm going to put on my 6.5 Grendel. I've belabored "which" for some time and have much the same choices as you. The Grendel has about the same range potential as 7.62x51 and I don't think I'm going to lose anything by going with the SS 1-6. |

I appreciate the input so far guys. Buy all means, keep it coming.
My "need" is for something that is good CQ but can still hit well out to about 500 yards. So I definitely agree that while the extra 4x on the 1.8-10 would be awesome I don't really need it. Plus I'm not really willing to shell out another $1k. Maybe on a different rifle, but not this one. |

My 1-4 gets me comfortably out there, and I have done much shooting with an Aimpoint (2MOA dot) at 300 yards.

Update:
So our tax return should be coming in the next couple days which means I'll be ready to purchase the scope. Looks like I'm sticking with the SWFA 1-6. I just had a couple more questions: 1) How long does it usually take once ordered for the scope to be shipped? 2) What rings should I go with for the SWFA? Do they have to be specific to SWFA brand or can I purchase different ones that will work fine? I have been looking at the "NightForce ULTRALITE 30mm Titanium / Alloy Ring Set" to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. Main reason being is the height increments will get me just about -exactly- where I want them. Thanks again for the help, guys! |

Any 30mm rings should work fine in terms of fitting the scope, but you may need to have a mount that places the scope a bit further forward of the action if this is going onto an AR.
