    Posted: June/09/2006 at 00:39

I have a SS 10X  and have noticed when engaging targets at 100 - 200 yards, etc., the mil-dots are distorted/blured.  Although I adjust the rear parallax on the scope, to get a clear picture, the dots seem to be obscured.  Any idea what could be the cause?

Thanks in advance.

    Do you mean that the entire reticle is distorted or just the dots? If it is only the dots two possabilities come to mind. One; you havent properly adjusted the rear focus, dial in the RTT on the parallax, and then focus it with the rear. Two; the factory may have made a mistake in etching the reticle and did it right with the rest of the reticle, but didn't achieve the proper depth on the dots, or something to that effect.

308,

proper way to focus a scope with parallax adjustment.

Find a featureless background to view through the scope.  Might be an interior wall in your home, or the cloudless blue sky.  Rifle of couse is UNLOADED and CHECKED TO BE SURE IT IS UNLOADED.

Don't worry about the parallax at this time.  Using the ocular fast focus adjustment, turn until the reticle begins to gain clarity.  Look at the center of the cross, and at the edges where the thin and medium portions of the crosshair join.
Adjust until these areas are as crisp as you can get them.  They should be well deined with straight, crisp edges.

The scope is now focused for your eye.

At the range;

Disregard all markings on the parallax knob......it's marketing and has no real world meaning.  If the ranges line up after we're done..Ok.  If not...Ok too.

Find your target, adjust the parallax knob ONLY until the target is as clear as possible.

SLIGHTLY moves you head UP/DOWN while holding the rifle steady.  If you can't hold the rifle steady while doing this, you need coaching but that's another topic entirely
The target should not move under the crosshairs.  If it does, adjust the parallax slightly and repeat.
When the crosshair and target move at the same time to the same place as your head moves, the scope is properly adjusted.

NEVER EVER adjust the parallax on target and then use the fast focus to clear things up.

Good advise, Mike.

I agree. Sounds like your reticle is NOT focused properly, .308.

If at first you don't secede...try..try again.
