First off hi to all and a Happy New Year.
I am in the process of setting up a long range rifle. I have a Remington 700 R5 rifle in 300 Win Mag on order. I would like to put a good Mil dot sole on it. I would like to keep the price down some because I'm retired and don't have a mess of dough. I might add that I'm retired LEO and firearms instructor. Don't have much experience with long range rifle, but do with tactical CQB types. Also any help in pointing me into the right direction on any reading material would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Budget and use of the rifle? I.E., strictly targets? Or target and hunting?

SS 3-9x and you have change left over for rings, ammo and sling.
3x on the bottom is a NICE feature too me. That's what I'd do for a SHTF rifle....and I did....er..do. The 3-15x is a nice option too. That 5R is sweet. Welcome to Optics Talk.

I would choose the the 3-15. It is a bit handier, because of the lower bottom end. And still has enough mag to reach out and touch those far targets. The turrets are are great, and the glass is really good.
Mine is mounted on a Remington, chambered in 7-08.

Thanks for the inputs guys. So far I'm leaning towards the SWFA SS-3-15X42. I used to be a died hard Leupold guy, but lately they have been going down the wrong road like all too many companies before them.
I did notice that the base and rings for the Remington from SWFA will run over $300. That is a King's ransom for sure. Is there any other set ups out there that will not bleed me dry??? That is just way too high IMHO!!!

Do you want a rail or ring mounts?

This would be a little better for me. But I must admit I am unfamiliar with "TPS" rings!?!? |

I would need a bolt action Remington base and rings. SWFA sells them as a kit, but want $313.

Or get the Tally Lightweights. Strong ,and fit first time every time. Not so many parts to shift like with rings and a base.

The above would be a solid set up. TPS rings are great, but rarely in stock. Not SWFA's fault. TPS just doesn't make enough of them to keep up with demand. |

They look good, but they don't look like they will be able to make any adjustments for eye relief. I do like the idea of the aluminum structure which will make them really light weight!!

They work great, no worries. Not QUITE as much fore and aft as a rail, but you can set it pretty much where you need it.
And all for $40.00. |
