New to this forum.
I'm on a limited budget and this scope will go on a 6.5 Cm that I use as my winter rifle. I use the rifle for squirell- caribou. I am in the process of learning to use a mil reticle for range estimation on game animals. Fox, lynx, coyote, wolverine, wolf and bou. |

Welcome to Optics Talk.
I'd advise you to purchase a Mil Dot Master to help you out. |

Yup. Thank you. That is one thing that will be included with the purchase when I buy the scope.
My primary question is about the usefulness of 6× . It appears that guys use 10× to shoot out to 1,000 y/m. And use the reticle to estimate the range. As I will be using this rifle as a general purpose rifle. I need the light transmission and fov more common in hunting and calling but I want to get started on precision shooting also. |

6x is a good choice for what you are doing, a little high mag IMO for hunting, but lots of people do it. If you could afford more the 3-9x would also be a great choice for what you are doing.

Well, that depends on your AO. Where I hunt, in the brier patches and hard wood forests of the Carolina's, a fixed 6x would probably be less than ideal. As Supertool stated, a SS 3-9x would be terrific. I have this and love it. I would concede that a German #4 is a better reticle in the briers at low light than a Mil Dot, but it's certainly doable.

Right. But a #4 isn't all that useful on a fox at 425 yards and the Winter rifle is not primarily a close range rifle. When the leaves are gone and snow covers everything the ranges can increase ALOT. Any old duplex works fine at close range.
I've played around with my variable scopes and 6× is useful at 30' . The farthest game animals I've taken were with scopes set on 6× and the very farthest was with a fixed 3× . But, having never range estimated with a reticle and the long term toughness of the fixed SS scopes. " not having to worry if it departed from its zero. I would like the SS on my rifle. The 3-9 SS is above my price range at this time. So my? Remains, how useful is the 6×42 SS scope for learning range estimation. And if it isn't, why? Thanks |

6x SS with Mil Dot is good to go. It's a Mil Dot. Sure.

Thank you. I know its not the be all end all scope. But if I can learn it then I'll be ahead of where I am now and have a lot more $$$ for ammo.

I'm thinking the mil quad reticle will be pretty useful also for the faster required shots. Once I learn them.

Thank you.
My AO varies from fairly thick brush to frozen lakes that can be several milesacross. Muskegs and frozen rivers. . Because Alaska hunting can have places where there is game moving and places that are temporarily totally devoid of game and because sometimes in some common hunting situations the only game seen may be 500 yards or more but the next time out the game may be all over the place I need to be able to successfully take either shot. |

Under those conditions, I would think a 3-9x would be more serviceable.

Oh, no doubt but there is only just so much $$$ . Winter time in the Interior is a relatively financially depressed area. And the utility bills triple or quadruple. 38¢ a kw . Starting vehicles at 45° below is an expensive propazition. Our cost of living is similar to NYC or LA.

Got one. That's my primary task during the first half of the winter. Keep the house warm and the vehicles in OK shape. The wife has year round work. Mine is seasonal. We usually get our coldest temps in the first half of the winter. We've been close to 50 below so far this winter but not quite there yet. Plenty of-40 tho.

Cold Trigger Finger, I have the 10x ss and I think you will find the Mil -Quad reticle suberb. To quote my wife "Diamonds are a lady's best friend, I love that you can see through them, unlike your dot scope." She is right the diamonds allow you to get a fairly accurate Mil measurement. If you have a droid there is an app called Mildot Calculator. I use it and have become quite proficient at it but I will admit it takes some practice to get it right. One thing I don't do anymore is dial on my knobs. I simply hold off because I feel the diamonds allow me to get the precision I need.
