I almost regret having posted those old 60s psychedelic songs over on Ed's "Oldies Radio" thread... looks like they triggered some acid flashes.

Lets make a fun comparison of .270 and '06 for deer using similar bullet weights.
A .30-06 with a Sierra 125 gr bullet @3100 fps has the same or greater "point blank" range (~ 360 yds.) as a .270 loaded with 130 gr. @ typical 3060 fps. Both calibers have plenty of power remaining at distance for deer. Most factory .30-06 125 gr ammo is loaded faster @ 3140 fps. Some claim the 125 gr wouldn't have enough sectional density for deer, but there are many testimonials around the web of people having great success after switching to the lighter '06 125 gr loads for deer. I've found no negatives from anyone who's actually tried it. What about bullet construction? A .270 130 gr really can't reach the velocity of a .30-06 125 gr and therefore must use a boattail design to exceed the 125 gr cup and core bullet's range. Boattails notoriously shed their jackets quicker than cup and core bullets. That .30-06 will even kick less than the .270 because it takes less powder to get that 125gr up to the velocity needed to reach the same point blank range as the heavier 130 gr. In its favor, the .30-06 125 gr @ 3100 fps is loaded down, at less chamber pressure than the .270 130 gr. For top end, the 125 gr Sierra can be loaded beyond 3300 fps. This comparison could talk about a 110 gr .270 load at 3300+ fps, but look close and you'll find that load doesn't really stretch the point blank range, either. Let's take it the other way... I have some Federal .30-06 ammo on hand with 180 gr Partitions @2880 fps. Is there a .270 load which hits that hard? It sure is fun to make these sorts of comparisons. Fact is, one really isn't going to significantly extend the hunting point blank range, or lessen recoil between these calibers at similar ranges until going to an entirely different case capacity. |

Oh, no doubt about it, the 30-06 is more BIGGER and versatile....but the 270 is a good cartridge.

It's time for me to get serious and say that yes, sakomoto is right, .270 is a fine caliber and has much to recommend it. There's no need for me to tease people about their .270's. Really.

I joke a lot about .270 because those who use it make such a big deal of it... I just have no use for it. There is nothing wrong with .270 (if you like girly guns...), there is just no niche it fills for me. All kidding aside... the .270 I had waa a fine rifle... it killed everything I ever shot with it... rock on...
To me, the .270/30-06 "controversy" is silly. 30-06 does all I need... I simply have no need for .270. Those who do... wonderful. THAT us why they make them... Me, I like a .458...

There is one 270 I'd like to have. It belongs to a friend of mine. It's a 98 Mauser Parker Hale action in a Fajen walnut stock that I glass bedded the action to. He has killed several deer with it, and it was just a cool looking rifle that was built by a couple of poor college students.

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

Now you're talking! There's also the vaguely defined and abstract quality of Underbore Appropriate Overbore that can be discussed. To me an appropriate caliber should push a bullet with a sectional density of ~.260 between 2900 fps to 3100 fps without excess pressure. That would mean 6.5 caliber 130 gr bullet 270 caliber 140 gr bullet 7mm caliber 160 gr bullet 30 caliber 180 gr bullet 338 caliber 210 gr to 225 gr bullet UNder 6.5 and you are really talking about varmints and SD plays less of a part, past 338 caliber and the recoil to do this is tooo much! (at least for me since I DO NOT LIKE MUZZLE BRAKES) So 6.5 Underbore - 6.5x55 Appropriate - 6.5 rem mag, 260 rem, 6.5-06 Overbore - 264 win mag 270 Appropriate - 270 WINCHESTER Overbore - 270 WSM, 270 Wtby 7mm Underbore - 7-08, 7x57, 280 rem, 284 win Appropriate - 280AI Overbore - 7 rem mag, 7 STW, 7 RUM, 7 Wtby 30 caliber Underbore - 308, 30-06 Appropriate - 300 WSM, 300 H & H, 300 win mag Overbore - 300 RUM, 300 Wtby 338 caliber Underbore - 338 win mag (with 225 gr bullet), 338-06 Appropriate - 338 RUM Overbore - 338-378 Wtby Now in an overbore caliber you can go to a higher sectional density bullet and slow your speeds down which would lower it to an "Appropriate" use and I am all for that. But I am not for going to a lower sectional density bullet to raise speeds, not appropriate IMO (but I've got a lot of them )

Right now I have a 6.5X55 so there is no urgency to go out and get a 270....( I am just a pig! )

Since sakomoto posted his opinion on rifle cartridege criteria, I thought I'd post the true benchmark of reality:
Barely adequate < [Just Right] .30-06 [Just Right] > Unnecessary |

Yeah....so a 300 Winchester ought to be even Happier!!!
A 270 is for confident people----like guys who use a 28 gauge to shoot birds. A 6.5X55 is for 270 people who want a better ballistic coefficient and who like to be non-conformists and want to have a conversation piece. A 458 Lott is for people who should be out in the bush with a roll of toilet paper and a packet of waterproof matches. |
