In the last year I have been target shooting with a dial in turret scope at ranges out to 1175yds. with my 338 and NF setup with great results. In the past I have hunted with a set it and forget it setup . This past year I hunted with a Burris 3-9 w bdc and was proficient  out to 600yd . I like the setup on my 300 that I tromp the Rockies but I am limited to 600yds with the plex  I am considering putting a vx3 4.5-14 x40 with cds. since it seems kinda compact  for my mtn rifle setup.  For a elk hunting rifle how do you folks feel about the AO vs. the non-AO model. I am wanting a scope that will offer the ability to dial in to the 800yd range (20moa)     I realize that parallax will have to be dealt with in the non AO model but it is a more compact package.

I like my 3-15, 4-16, etc on my elk rifles.  But I also hunt with a 3-9 on some of my rifles and love the simplicity of it.  I am actually looking to scope my 300 WM and have the same debate, but I won't be shooting an elk at 800 yards. I know I can get a lot closer.

I just realized that the CDS Is available on the 3.5-10x40. I feel the may be a better option . any thoughts.

I think it would be difficult to shoot long range with a scope that has a 100 yards parallax. I have two Sightrons with the AO on the front bell, and a SS with the side focus. The side focus is easier to get to but a tad more touchy to get spot on (at least for me). The Sightron's AO on the front bell is slightly harder to get to but allows for a smoother transition for a clear view (at least for me).

Even at 200 yards, it's neat to see a woodchuck "pop" into view.
