My nephew has an older flat back Savage in 270.  I pulled the old scope off and picked up a Vortex Diamondback 3-9x40.  When I tried to mount it in the mounts that were already on the gun, it just barely fit between the rings and it was mounted too far forward.  The original mounts/rings were Leupolds.  I bought Talley Lightweight extended rings in low and that doesn't work either as the power ring or the objective bell hit the base of the rings.

Any suggestion on mounts/rings to use for the Vortex or, if not, a good scope that has a longer mounting area than the Vortex?

Thanks,
Mike

Might want to consider DNZ. I have them on my Vortex and they work awesome. Mine is a short action, but I know they have em for long action too.

Good luck!

I have the DNZ mounts on a few rifles and while they are great, I do not think they will give me the spacing I'm looking for on this particular rifle.

Thanks,
Mike

Can you mount a pic rail on the Savage and then get a set of TPS (or comparable) rings?

I can mount an EGW rail but I'm concerned the scope may hit the rail itself. I may try that and order low and medium rings to see which works.  However, I'd rather a cleaner looking setup if at all possible.  I'm sure someone must've had this issue before and hoping they will chime in.

Thanks,
Mike

http://swfa.com/Savage-C2074.aspx    Talley Base

Call  SWFA for assistance in selecting the correct ring height and base.  Be sure to mention how long the action is and the trouble you are having so that they are aware of the issues involved.

Mount the EGW rail, and cut the extended front portion off to clear the objective.
