I have been looking for a new rifle that would be adequate for hunting in Alaska. And I was thinking either 300 or 338 mags, but was able to shoot a Dakota 76 in 375H&H. I shot 300gn at 1600ft/sec and was surprised that the recoil was not that bad. I would rather shoot this than my buddy's Rem in 300wsm. Plus I was told you can down load it for smaller game. The shop can get me any of these four. A Rem, Browning, Winchester or a CZ. Thoughts on this cal and which rifle?

The velocity should have been 2600 not 1600.

GunTests ran a comparison of the Remington and Winchester .375s in their September, 2012 issue.  They reviewed the CZ, Ruger M77 Mark II, and Kimber .375s in the March 2010 issue.  You might want to get copies of these issues to see what virtues and vices they noted for each.  (www.Gun-Tests.com

The .338 worked just fine on my brown bear hunt (a 250 grain Nosler partition put it down DRT).  It also worked well for others on that trip.  The .338 will do anything you need to do in North America.

if you ever hope to go to Africa for dangerous game, though, the .375 may be a better choice since it seems to be the minimum dangerous game caliber for most countries over there.

.375H&H is a great round.  Just in case you don't know though the load you shot is not exactly representitive of the recoil to expect when shooting even moderate loads.  My SIL's .45-70 load is a 405gr at 1600.

I'm shooting 270gr RNSP at 2760 in my 375H&H.  Not much recoil at all.
500gr at 2450 in my 458Lott.

My bad. The velocity should have been 2600 not 1600. Well actually the three round avg was 2604. And from what I have read that is fairly representative of that round. But this is a whole new area for me. So I would like to get some more informed opinions. I have a 50BMG, but my next biggest cal is a 308.

Mine is a Remington 700 classic and I could not be happier. I use both 270 and 300 gr bullets and the recoil is not bad at all.

Ah, Remington.  That barely qualifies it as a firearm.

The scope is nice though...

Ouch. Obviously, you don't suffer from the dreadful Remmy desire syndrome! Me either. Big green isn't my favorite either. .

A CZ is mighty tempting.  So's a Winchester.  Secretly, I'd like to find a Mark X and put a left hand low swing safety on the shroud.

Some very nice rifles! So far it seems CZ and Winchester are the favorites.

Why no love for the Browning X bolt?

And is the 375 Ruger a rare cal? And how does it compare with the 375H&H?

I had a Browning  375 H& H and it would NOT group as in good luck hitting the barn from inside. I have a TC Encore .375 H&H barrel that I shoot some and I really like the caliber and wish I had a Bullberry barrel in that caliber rather than the TC barrel.   I looked real hard at a Winchester not long ago and very much liked it. I wish Tikka T3 came in that caliber they go up to  .338 WM and stop.  I have been very impressed with the  .375 Ruger made By SAVAGE they seem to be a fine choice and slightly faster plus it is not a belted case.  So my first choice would be a stainless  Savage .375 Ruger and my second choice would be a Winchester 375 H&H.   There are also some Sako 85 stainless  .375 H&H on gunbroker.com
