A young man I work with is in dire need of a decent scope. He bought a Rem 700ADL (270W) & a cheapy Bushnell @ WalMart last year.Of course the Bushnell turned belly up.Like most of us,he's a family man w/ bills, kids etc.& $'s are tight.I lent him a scope so he could hunt last season.I've told him that as best I know in the $2-300 range the Weaver Grand Slam was hard to beat.In the $3-400 range the B&L (OK Bushnell) 4200 was the ticket.I've also noticed that some Burris Signatures are available (Sample List) in the $3-400 range.I don't have any experience w/ the Burris products. He told me his wife would go ballistic if he spent $400 on a scope.I told him some times it's better to beg forgiveness than to ask permission.Any advise/suggestions?He's the kind of young man that renews an old farts faith in the future of our world(ie no whine,no snivel do it right the first time etc.).Who knows maybe Xmas might come early this year.Got to figure a way that won't offend him. |

On the high side, I would the Zeiss Conquest for about $400.00 and on the low end I would go with the Burris Fullfield II for just under $200.00. Both scopes in 3-9x40 and yes the Zeiss is worth the extra $200.00.

Yeah Weaver Grand Slam followed by Burris Fullfield II would be my advice.

I also would recommend the Burris Fullfield II 3x9 matte finish with
ballistic plex reticle and free spotting scope. At under $200, it
is an awesome deal, and I believe a very good scope for the
money. While I haven't hunted with mine yet, it is bright
and clear and has shown excellent repeatability of adjustments at the
range and has shown no problems handling the recoil of my
.270WSM. While it is probably only "comparable" to similarly
priced scopes like the Leupold VX-1 and Nikon Buckmaster, the free
spotting scope makes it the obvious choice. Even if you don't
need the spotter, you should have no trouble selling it new in box for
$50 or so, reducing the net price of the Burris Fullfield II scope to
around $150.

i agree with everybody here. IMHO, and humble it is, the FF2 witht he free spotter is the best scope for the money out there. i would opt for that.

$200-$400
Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40....$429.95 Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 FireFly....$379.95 Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40....$249.95 Nikon Monarch 3-9x40....$299.95 Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36....$399.95 Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 Ballistic Plex with FREE 12-24x50 Spotter....$319.95
The Grand Slam is the best of the bunch for the money and just happens to be the least expensive. The Burris combo is the best deal with the free spotter. The Zeiss and 4200 are the best optics. |

I just purchased a Burris 3-10x40 Signature Select for $372 from Chris here at SWFA, and I love the scope. The service at SWFA is also great. In the $400 range the two scopes that I looked at were the Burris Signature Select 3-10x40 and the Ziess 3-9x40 Conquest. I personally prefer the Burris, but the Ziess Conquest is also a great scope. In the $200 to $300 range I would go with the Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40. It is a great scope for the money, and SWFA has them cheaper than anywhere else that I have seen. If I were limited to less than $200 I would go with the Burris 3-9x40 Fullfield II, it is the best scope in this class. I think that it is better than the Leupold VXII 3-9x40, the Bushnell 3200 3-9x40, the Weaver V series 3-9x38 or the Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40. As much as I love Burris scopes, if money was tight, I would take a hard look at the Weaver 3-10x40 Grand Slam.

No doubt the above mentioned scopes meet the task, my choice would be the Simmons Aetec 2.5X10. Haviing used the Simmons and Burris Ballistic 3X9 extensively they both suffer from panarama and vignetting on the highest settings. For the lower price of the Simmons it is pretty hard to beat. (I used this scope thru 1000 rounds of 308 on an FN-FAL which has literally torn several scopes apart).
