FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE A BORE-SIGHTER:
Sight through the bore at a target of 100 yards. Move the rifle about to center the target in the bore
Sight through the scope and adjust the windage and elevation screws to center the target on the reticle.
For those who may not know!!!! Edited by Stephanie |

I use a rifle rest while sighting in my scopes. It does a good job of holding the rifle still while I sight it in.
Here is the proceedure that I use:
1) Make point of aim == point of impact at 25 yards use the highest magnification pick an aiming point on the target that I can remember. fire one round hold rifle so crosshairs on point of aim adjust the windage and elevation so the the crosshairs are on the point of impact. fire a round to verify point of aim == point of impact repeat proceedure until point of aim == point of impact
2) Make point of aim == point of impact at 100 yards use the highest magnification pick an aiming point on the target that I can remember. fire one round hold rifle so crosshairs on point of aim adjust the windage and elevation so the the crosshairs are on the point of impact. fire a round to verify point of aim == point of impact repeat proceedure until point of aim == point of impact
3) Check group of 3 or 5 shoots shoot 3-5 shoots at same point of aim measure goup check for acceptable accuracy
4) Varmint scope use turrets to adjust POI I should be dead on at 100 yards Use computer program to calculated POI at 100 yards for dead on at 200, 300, 400, 500 yards Adjust elevation to be dead on at each yardage and check elevation at 100 yards.
5) Big Game Use the max point blank range method Determine POI at 100 yards adjust elevation so bullets hit at 100 yards as specified to maximise point blank range. |

How about insuring correct scope position in the rings without a bore sighter? Any tricks to get the scope positioned so the recticles are perfectly verticle/horizontal? |

The Segway Reticle Leveler works pretty well.

A down and dirty trick for any rifle, even AR and oddies like a CETME is as follows. Set the rifle on something solid, like the back of a sofa. Stick a 1 inch or smaller red dot on the wall opposite. Look down the bore and center it on the dot, Carefully look through the scope and adjust the recticle settings. For horizontal position and last tighting (usually this is done before the bore sighting) hold the rifle on the sofa and like up the horizontal with a window sill. Now back your eye ball away untill the scope opening, the light coming thru and the black shadow form concentric circles. YOu should see a small part of the cross hair and the off set will be immediately apparent. |
