Hi guys!
I'm from Germany (near Wetzlar ;-) )and looking for a good glas to hunt wild boar at night. If you ask hunters here in Germany they will all tell you that you need a Swarovski Z6i or a Zeiss Victory. For most people here a Meopta Meostar is "cheap crap", but some of the younger guys are using them and they say they are pretty good. That's why I want to ask in an American Board to get some opinions from people who are not that focused at "our" brands. Which Scope would you recommend for hunting at night? Do you think it's better to buy a older scope with better glas and without illumination (That's what most hunters tell you here but they are about 60 years in average) or a newer with a little less light transmission and illumination? It would be great to get a scope for about 1000$, but I will pay more if I have to. I just don't want to pay 2000$ for 2% more performance (and not really more practical effect) compared to the 1000$ scope.

They are being snobs because I have a Meostar 3-12x56 RD as well as S&B, Kahles, Zeiss and Swarovskis
It will hang right their with them past sark hunting hogs under moonlight. |

+1. The Meostar's aren't crap at all! Not everybody can (or wants to) drop thousands of dollars on a scope. |

I have not had a meostar, but after having some time with a meopro, I seriously doubt the meostar's are crap!

Thank you guys, that's what I expected.
I could only compare the scopes in the store and under this conditions they all seem very good. But at night in the forest it's a different story :-) Any other opinions? Do you all think a Meostar is good enough? As I said, for me the practical effect is important. If a Z6i is really that much better I'll buy it. But if it isn't I'll get a AR15 from that money, just for fun :-)

I would really try to compare the scopes you are looking at outdoors and if possible under similar light conditions to which you are going to hunt. Indoor lighting is different than the light outdoors. In good light most scopes look good. It is under more challenging lighting conditions that the differences become more apparent. |

If you come from the Capital of optics (and dont want to spend 2000EUR on a scope), you could at least go with KAPS Klassik 2.5-10x56 or looked in the direction of Jena and buy Docter Klassik 3-12x56. Both are better than MeoStar. ;) |

Have you compared a Meopta recently?
I popped a pig right behind the ear at 290 yards under a 1/2 moon a few weeks ago with the Meopta on my 6.8 |

Take a look at the Trijicon Accupoints too, if you can buy them there. That's what I use for night hogs. They're fiber optic reticle is hard to beat at any price. Glass isn't bad either. It's not Swarovski glass, but it's plenty good enough. You use your scope 1% of the time and your binoculars 99%. Spend your dollars, err, euros accordingly.

I used night vision on hog hunts with this outfitter a couple years ago in Georgia. They supplied the equipment which is also listed on their site. Four of us shot 26 hogs one night. Very effective, but the good stuff is very expensive. |

I have the Meopta Meostar R1 3-12 that I got to put on a German Voere Shikar 300WinMag. Not mounted yet... difficult to get base and rings, but I've played with the scope quite a bit. 1st, it is 30mm, which for me is always better than a 1" scope... MY PERSONAL LIKE, for those 1" tube lovers.. que sera. Glass quality is very good. I've used it to spot raccoons in my backyard in crescent moon conditions. Everything about it is quality. Workmanship is fine. "Clicks" are solid, audible, tactile, though the turrets are not tactical-type... it's a hunting scope. Once I get it zeroed for a particular ammunition, I won't ever mess with it, will just use the excellent 4B reticle. Eye-box is a "little critical", but acceptable. There is a slight tunneling effect at 3x, but when compared with similarly priced-higher priced scopes, most will never notice it. There is nothing about it I hate... cannot say that of a number of scopes I own... and there is a lot to like and love about it. In a full moon, you can hunt all night with it. I already have... (not on a rifle, just spotting and then going to a .22 with one of my lesser quality scopes).
While the adjustments don't lend themselves, easily, to tactical shooting, at need it could be pressed into such service very easily. The reticle makes acquisition easy and ranging is quite good. I've only checked it to a couple hundred yards, but it is fast and accurate. Easy to learn to use. All the things I like... easy, efficient, quality glass, fast, accurate... no qualms at all about this scope.
