My sister gives me a call and tells me she's dung up buried treasure while trying to plant a shrub in her side yard.  She was all excited cause this area was in the heart of the civil war and she thought it might have been dropped during a battle or some encounter because the hammer is cocked.  Teasing her about the dollar signs in her eyes I told her to bring it over so I could attempt identifying it for evaluation.

When I first saw it I laughed then looked a little closer.  Tell me what you guys think this is!!!!

I think it looks like a Schoffield....  has a top rail the length of barrel.  Is obviously a top break revolver I'm guessing it's a 32 caliber....  it's fairly small.  Oh and BTW it came out of the ground intact.  Sister bnroke the handle trying to clean it...

The shooters bible I have doesn't have but one top break pistol in it and thats a Schoffield so any feed back is appreciated.  I wish it wasn't so badly corroded!
The H&R Earl posted looks pretty close from what I can see.  I am completely un-educated about older pistols especially top breaks.

Ed can u post a few picutres of Iver Johnsons?

It could also be a Smith & Wesson, H&R, or one of several others that copied the S&W top break design.

What year was her house built? This will give you a starting point for the age, being the revolver was found near the house.

I have a few top breaks, even had one that gave me fits until Bigdaddy's gunsmith friend got it right for me.  They were copied ALLOT! even if it was in prestine condition you might have a few hundred dollars in value.

 .

The house was built in the early 60s.  but like I said this area so populated long before the Constitution was ratified.  We are surrounded by farms 150 to 250+ years old.  The lady my sister bought the house from was born in it.  I'll have to merntion it to her the next time our paths cross.

The site of the house was an old farm from thde 1700s...

Top breaks in the smaller .32 and .38 calibers and double action were popular in the 1880s through about the 1930s as pocket pistols for self defense.
Does your sister ever bump into someone who isn't there in her house?

This one looks like a gunfight lost do to the low power cartridge. Was there a skeleton next to it with some holes in it?

Im sure a museum in the area would find in interesting.

That's amazing.  I couldn't imagine the feeling of finding something like that with so much history possibly attached.

My girlfriend and I have been talking about getting a metal detector...  I need to show her this. Yippee

I had an old cheap pistol when I was a kid. Dad broke off the firing pin and it became a toy. They were as cheap as a good cap gun. Those were the days. It was good when America was free. Not like today where you can go to jail for having a plastic toy airsoft gun.
