Hello.  I'm planning to scope my CZ-550 in .375 H&H.  I shoot this rifle at the range quite often and need a scope that will handle 1000+ rounds.  (Yes, I reload.)  I've had the rifle for less than a year and already have close to 700 rounds through it.  I just want to make sure the scope I choose can keep up.  The scopes I am considering are...

http://swfa.com/Leupold-15-5x20-VX-3-Riflescope-P12635.aspx

http://swfa.com/Leupold-125-4x20-VX-R-30mm-Riflescope-P48030.aspx

http://swfa.com/Nikon-1-4x20-Monarch-3-Riflescope-P61591.aspx

The Leupold VX-3 seems to be a traditional choice for this kind of rifle.  The VX-R has the advantage of a 30mm tube and illuminated dot, but it doesn't seem to have the established track record of the other two scopes.  The Nikon Monarch 3 seems like a great bargain, and I have read plenty of good reviews.  This is the same scope as the Monarch African with a new name...right?  Thanks in advance for your insights on these scopes.  I'm also open to suggestions of other brands or models.

Just checking locations... 1000's of rounds of 375H&H... some ranges would be negative about that.  Oklahoma will probably give you an award... they DO border the Great State of Texas...

Eh, if one were to shoot that much .375 from the bench, it would be pretty miserable.  I hardly ever shoot from the bench.  From practical shooting positions like standing, kneeling, or even sitting on the ground with elbows supported by knees, your body can roll with the recoil.  My CZ has the European style 'hogs back' stock which deflects a bit of the recoil as well.  You get a bit more muzzle rise, but the rifle isn't coming straight back at you.  --Stork

Out of the three listed I would get the 1.5-5x20 Leupold. I have one for my .375 H&H and it can handle anything that caliber can dish out.
I have since put a Kahles 1.1-4x24 on it because of the superior glass and great 4A reticle. But the Leupold is always ready in some Talley QD's because I know it will work.
There are good reports on the Nikon around here. I have a couple of Monarch scopes and if that
1-4x20 scope is reliable, I would be pleased with the glass.

Here is another couple of possible choices.  I do like the idea of the 1.5-5 VX3 better but this give you an option as fixed power scopes are tough as nails.

Thanks for the input.  I'm leaning towards getting one of the Leupold scopes based on Leupold's reputation for warranty service.  If I manage to rattle the scope to bits, I can have it repaired and the transfer it to my AR-15.  At that point I could try one of Leupold's fixed power scopes or look at other brands.

That being said, the VX-R seems to be a better value for the money in terms of features.  Do any of you have an opinion whether it would be as durable ans the VX-3?

I've only delt with the VXR patrol and it has held up very well.  I've not heard anyone with a VXR thats had an issue either.

One more question:  How does one determine what height rings to buy for a given scope/rifle combination?  For those of you with a CZ-550 Safari Magnum, will medium rings work, or do I need high rings?  I'm going to get either Warne or Talley QD rings.  --Stork

My 375 is a Sako 85 Hunter in Stainless.  I can take no more than 20 shots at a time before my shoulder is killing me and my shooting goes to hell because I'm thinking about the pain.  Even reloading means about $2.00 per shot.  I don't shoot enough to reload, so I just shoot boxed stuff at $4.00 per shot.

My Sako wears a Leica ER 3.5-14x42 purchased off the Sample List.  It has about 100 rounds through it, and I've never had a problem.  I do recommend a 30 mm tube.

Given that my Sako has the integrated rail, I had to buy Sako rings.  I've not had a problem, and the design seems very solid.

Remember, my Sako is SEVERAL pounds lighter than your CZ.  Your gun is BEEFY, so I wouldn't expect your scope to take as much punishment.
