Anyone have comments on these light trasmission tests? If you click on the binocular model, the PDF of the test comes up. I saw these results in a recent advertisement. |

The CIE 1931 and CIE 1975 LAB are Human Perceiveable Color. Later in 1993 the CIE Standard - International Color Consortum (ICC) became Human Percieveable Color in CRT - TV Space for the purpose of printing to a press.
If you notice from the test the Color Temp is based on 5000K (Color Temp is Red - Not equal Energy) and in addition this is based on the later 1993 ICC "TV" LAB Standard
I think this test is interesting... though I think a better test would be a run down of each lens seperate, prism system and then the whole system as a total.
I would also like to know the description of the light source. (Focus, flood, etc..) My company actually builds PMT Devices and this matters alot.
. In any case.. glad someone is trying to get greater detail on bino performance. |

Noddah, what is the actual percentage of color ( light ) that the test is trying to capture. Without knowing the specific light source, I am skeptical about the validity of these tests with regards to the actual transmission of natural light.
The test results would have you believe that the Pentax HRll is brighter than the SP. It would be great if there was an industry standard, which I do not believe exists. Edited by Roy Finn |

I cannot speak to the light source in the test.
Though...
If you were to compare Gamma - Video Curves (ICC 1993 LAB Space) to actual “S” Shaped Density (Outside World) the light & color being measured is approximately 50% - 60% less than the light & color space - density of the world. |

I find that to be very interesting. I love carson XM binoculars I think they are one of the best buys out there. However, I disagree with some of the results of the "test". I personally think that Pentax DCF SP's are brighter than the Nikon Monarchs and the Pentax DCF HRII ' by a fairly noticable amount.
