Hi....new forum member here. I lurked for a while before joinig and noticed that more than a handful of you seem to have a strong understanding of optics and precision shooting.
Anyway, I'm about to order a Geiselle trigger for my recently acquired Armalite AR-10(T) 20", so the next purchase will be the optic. I'm basically wanting a 100m-600m rifle for 90% bench rest and prone shooting at the range I'm a member of. However, I intend to occasionally got out to a friends private land and shoot at unknown ranges, so I want a scope that will assist with ranging if possible. Unlike some of you, I don't have $2k -$3k for an optic. My target price is in the $600 - $1k range. From what I've been reading, Vortex seems to be a great value in terms of scopes in my price range, particulary the Viper PST line. My concern is selecting the best magnification. I've been going back and forth between the 2.5-10x44 (no parallax knob and no FFP), and the 4-16x50 FFP. I would be comparing the 2.5-10x32 FFP to the stronger scope, but I dont like the small objective. Anyway, considering my mentioned usage, is the the general consensus that I just go forward with the stronger 4-16 scope? |

That particular Weaver is actually a scope I've been considering. A little heavier than some of the others, but the quality and price look good. Do you have this particular scope?

No I don't. I run a SS 5-20x50. But I have looked through that scope at a couple of different competitions and have been pleasantly surprised. The PST is also a really good scope, but for you list of requirements and rifle, this makes more sense to me.
Also I would suggest you reconsider the 2.5-10x32, as it will have roughly the same exit pupil as the 4-16x50, if both scopes are on top magnification.(32/10=3.2mm, 50/16=3.125mm). And be a just fuzz quicker for those "close encounters".

I own the Weaver 3-15x Tactical and am very pleased with it. It is mounted on a Savage .308 Model 10 Precision Carbine, also with 20" barrel. Saturday I finally had a chance to shoot it beyond 200 yards out to 800 yards on paper and steel and was very pleased with the optical quality and tracking among various other features I like. Sunday another shooter showed up at the range with a heavy barreled Rock River AR 15 with the same Weaver scope and a new Savage 24" .308 he had just dropped into a Choate tactical stock and equipped with a new Vortex PST 4-16x. After shooting we both visually spotted targets at various ranges through all three scopes and both concluded that the Weaver had a small but noticeable edge in optical quality, especially at the higher magnification settings. We are both shooters with no expertise in optics other than we have used a lot of different scopes. We discussed value for dollars spent and both of us felt that both of these scopes offer a lot of performance for the value conscious sporting rifleman who really can't or won't justify spending up for the very best. I am pleased enough with my Weaver that I am considering the Weaver 2-10x Tactical for a 6.5 Grendel build that is complete except for a bolt I have not been able to come up with yet.

Here are a few I'd at least look at before making a purchase. I like the Viper PST, it was ok but always left me wanting a bit more when I had one, Vortex is an awesome company with a VIP warranty like no other. The weaver tactical is getting great reviews. Would probably serve you very well. The only issue I have with weaver is their CS, not as user friendly, at least in my experience, I have a scope going back to them again for the third time for the same problem with illumination.
