I got impatient and went ahead and ordered the Viper with a SFWA S.S.A.L.T AD Recon 1-piece mount.

Too bad Bushnell is coming out with a 1-4 x 24 that looks very promising
http://www.bushnell.com/tactical/rifle-scopes/ar-optics/1-4x-24mm-throw-down-pcl
Has lots of features
FFP
BTR-1 reticle
True 1x
Illuminated (Tech support says it's "daylight bright" but maybe like the Vortex
Throw lever

Looks interesting. I own 3 Elites and haven't had a single problem with them. If these are as good as the Elites they'll do well. One thing I noticed is they don't come with Rainguard...would be a big plus if they did.
This will be my first Vortex and I've heard nothing but good things about em, so I'm anxious to get a hold of it.

I was thinking about the same 2 scopes, but I ended up with an IOR 1.5-8x26. I think you did well with the Vortex. Let us know what you think about it.

Got the Viper mounted up last night...this thing is nice. I'm digging the 1x where I can use both eyes. My only small complaint would be the size of the reticle...it could be a tad bigger, definitely not a deal-breaker though (the illumination makes up for the reticle size).
Time will tell but I think this is going to be a good setup.

Hello,
Wondering if I might solicit some further debate on the best 1x-4x. In addition to the three scopes posted here I am also considering the following:
Burris MTAC or the TAC 30
Leupold MOD AR (Don't like the smaller size?)
Vortex Viper PST
Millet DMS
Leatherwood CMS
Had a chance the other day to look through a Millet DMS and then a Trijicon Accupoint. Really bummed about the difference between the two in clarity and brightness but the Trijicon is two or three times the money. Hoping I can stay under $500 and I would like to stay with the larger tube like the Millet and the Trijicon have. Not sure if the Burris and Vortex models have the larger tube size or not, can't find one locally.
Thanks for your input...

If you could go to $680 there are several of the SS 1-4s on the sample list.

Like I said above...I went with the Viper PST and love it so far.
If I had the funds, I probably would've went the SS 1-4 but I'm happy with Viper.

The Viper should be a good choice. One that I like that doesnt get a lot of attention is this one.

The Mk 4 version of the same thing with different reticle is a lot more money.
