I decided I need a scope for my AR15 firing .223. The problem is what one, that is what power is best for my needs. I’m just plinking right now but also plan to use the AR as a home defense option also. I don’t hunt at this point but you never know what the future holds. Any way I’m looking at these : Leupold 1.5-4x20 Mark AR MOD 1 Riflescope Leupold 3-9x40 Mark AR MOD 1 Riflescope Burris 1-4x24 Fullfield TAC 30 Tactical 30mm Rifle Scope Millett 1-4x24 DMS / SWFA S.S.A.L.T. Combo Mueller 1-4x24 Speed Shot 30mm Riflescope Mueller 3-9x40 Hybrid Riflescope Nikon 3-9x40 P223 Riflescope Nikon 1-4x20 M223 Riflescope Kit Nikon 2-8x32 M223 Riflescope Kit My question is which makes more since for what I’m doing versus what I will be doing. I’m pretty good up to 50 yards with iron sights but after that these old eyes need some help. Which would you recommend and if you don’t mind explaining why. And if you think something else would work better for me please let me know. I should have added I'd like to stay around $300 for the scope. My funds are limited and the boss has put me on a short leash. I figure I can do around $300 to $350 without have to sleep in the car (well jeep) and that is no fun.

I have tried a number of scopes on an AR but I find most to be too bulky and I really prefer an illuminated optic in case I need to use it at night. Trijicon compact ACOG s are my favorite but I have had good luck with Aimpoint red dots also and they are much better than other brands. As far as traditional optics go I believe that a fixed power scope is tougher than a variable power scope and I am pretty comfortable getting onto something with a 6x fixed power scope. If you want a variable there are a number of choices all of which can work well for you. If you go to this web page you can see the combo packages available to you http://swfa.com/Optic-Packages-C4618.aspx
of them I like these two the best. CALL SWFA to be sure the one you want is in stock.

Well I am seriously thinking about the Leupold Mark AR MOD 1 Riflescope with Duplex reticle I doesn't have the fiber optics but it looks like good glass and well made.
Next question is what height mounts should I go for? And are there certain ones I should stay away from? I was looking at the Burris or Weaver and they go from 1/4in to 1in. How do you determine which to order? |

my first responce would be,imo, there's nothing like a good red dot sight for speed, ease of use and possibly your head not being in the best position in a stressful situation(they have no eye relief issues nor exit pupil compromises) for defending your home(not to mention that in a defense situation,we're usually talking close distances, even from a legal point).
having said that,it seems you really want some magnification for possible future hunting and to see targets better further out,...so,given that compromise, not having perfect vision, possibly no experience shooting both eyes open with a scope that has some magnification at it's lowest setting and budget restrictions, here's the second thing i would say. get yourself a scope that starts at 1x at it's lowest setting. i can use up to about 3x magnification with both eyes open successfully but when i practise with a 1-x scope,i realize i can be even faster and my brain doesn't have to work as much. however, peoples ability to do this varies greatly,so my suggestion is to get a scope that starts at 1x. for an AR15 in .223 and given your budget,i would look at the leatherwood CMR 1-4x24,burris fullfield TAC30 1-4x24,mueller speed shot 1-4x24 and millett DMS 1-4x24,..and i would consider them in that order more or less. get the leatherwood if you want a finer more precise reticle or the burris if you want a reticle that can be picked up quickly for close-in shots,...and if you find both of those too cluttered and want a more simple reticle, get the mueller. if you plan on using the turrets alot, beyond just zeroing,i would get the leatherwood but the mueller might work out well for that too. for what you want it for,the nikon M-223 would be out for me because it has no illumination. i'm from florida too.
