Yeah if your at a low cam setting it won't adjust out to the longer meter ranges. Mine gets to the end of the cam at about 700 meters set at 310 to 340.

Ok, same for me. It just means that the mil-dots aren't usable as such unless you uncouple the magnification ring...
I'm still thinking about shooting it. It's hard for me to admit it when I make a bad call... |

Got one shipped out today for my FNAR. So from what it sounds like, the cam setting for the ballistics of a 308 Win physically isn't letting it go above 700m?
Not that I'd be shooting at 700m, I mean generally 308 goes subsonic around 550m. So hopefully in 3 days I'll be able to check mine out. |

With the right bullet a .308 can still be super sonic near 1200 yards. Not sure where your gettimg your data, but it is well beyond 550 meters

pushing my 150 grain Sierra HPBT at only 2550 lets me stay supersonic out to 800 yards... 168's will go to 1000. 175's too (putting some stress on a gas gun, but no prob for a bolt gun)
My issue was using the mil-dots as mil-dots on a sfp scope requires the (usually) max magnification (please correct me if I'm wrong), which would require me to disengage the power ring from the cam to avoid having the nylon roller fall into the counterbore. I intended to shoot this as a field type scope, but if I do, I'll have to get a bi-pod in order to wrangle the dial, as I can't do it with a G.I. web sling... Any suggestions as to what other scope I may like? My opinion (and understanding) of what I really want are evolving. I may even want a fixed power scope! |

That's why I said generally My bad, I meant in my experience with my particular gear and ammo. |

Assuming you want to stay in the same price range, I'd go with a SS 10x42, mil dot, mil turret. That is my second choice if the m1000 doesn't float my boat. Although it looks like they are hard to come by at the moment. |

Thanks badkarma, that's pretty much where I was leaning...
I was thinking 6X42... |

I have 4 Leatherwood ART scopes... 2 Sporter ARTs, 1 M1000, 1 Leatherwood/Weaver... a very good friend has M1200, none have never experienced anything like what you describe. I know a number of people with ARTs, have never heard of such issues before.

If I go with a fixed SS, I'm still torn between 6 and 10, as I don't plan on doing any hunting with it, but would like the option. Where I live my longest shot might be 300yards, I have access to a 800yard range and the gun club I plan to join does 1000 yarders quarterly. But I'd have to step up my gear and loads to have a chance at that.
As an engineer and Vietnam history junkie, I'm intrigued with how the ART system came about, so hopefully it'll work for me. |

I just got the scope in, set it for 420 for 308 168gr as stated in the manual and it turns easily until I get a little shy of 800m, at that point it's like hitting a wall and I do not feel comfortable putting any more force, if that is required.
Not that I would ever shoot at more than 800m but I don't like not having the option. I've not seen anything in the spec sheet stating these types of limits Is that extra force normal and will not harm the system or am I sending this back? |

No need to send it back. The spring is rather tight at first. It will work in. The .420 cam setting seems to be about right for you. I'm using between 410 and 420 for my .223, .308, or Grendel. It works well enough.
I just mounted mine on a .223 upper recently. It's been sitting around unused for a while. I like these scopes. They're pretty neat. The cam allows for a lot of functionality. I think the M1000 is the potentially most functional of the bunch. I prefer the turrets to the other models. you aren't limited to the cam. There remains the option of using these things as a traditional scope, and accuracy is a bit better that way. The cam adds a lot of usability for that too though. It completely eliminates any need for an angled base. The criticisms I do have though, are that it doesn't seem to be the most robust scope in the world. The aluminum seems soft, and easily stripped. The retaining screw for the nylon bearing is stripped on mine for instance. Also, the setscrews for the turrets seem to work loose under recoil. Those I replaced with allen screws. The tension spring on the cam also seems to relax over time, so when trying to use the lower cam settings, it will reach a point where the spring has absolutely no tension on the cam anymore. In addition, the cam also always seems to shift windage as I cam out. I think that might be due to a slight offset between the forward ball bearings used to pivot the cam. In all, I do like the scope. The turrets seem to track well enough, and I like the mildot setup at 10x. The range finding functions are novel, and more functional than mildots at a different magnification setting. |

I'm still up in the air on it, I have 60 days to decide so I can think on it for some time.
Along with your critique on it, I would also like the ability to add standard tactical turrets. I really have no need for all the extra zeros and if I wanted to use it as a standard scope I'd have to make sure the caps don't walk away. One thing I do like is the ability to adjust windage on the base for not so perfectly aligned rails. That is something I did not expect from doing my research on the system. |

Well, I will say that the M1000 does get a number of things right. The turrets are fairly nice, despite all those multiple zero rings. I mean, it's functional. It does what it's supposed to, and is void of irritatingly illogical characteristics (1/8moa shifty turrets). My biggest complaint is in the construction. I think I might just have an older model though, and so perhaps I might not stand as the rule, but the exception there. Still, if I had to choose between the M1000 and a SS, I would have to go the way of the SS.
The SS is simply no frills and to the point. It's a robust scope that simply works, and it's cheap. It's void of gimmicks or otherwise illogical configurations found in too many other budget scopes. |

I would agree, and if there were any SS scopes available in the same price range I would have gone with one. Still might if I catch swfa when they get some in.
