I have been considering one of the SS scopes for my long range varmint rifle, but have heard both the 16x and 20x suffer from a finicky eye relief. I definitely want the additional magnification for PD shooting out to 1000+ yards, but having to fight the dreaded "black hole" isn't something I want to have to deal with. So, my question is how sensitive are these two models to eye relief compared to the Elite 4200's and Leupold's with similar magnification?

The 20x has an exit pupil of 2.10 mm. The 16x has an exit pupil of 2.63 mm.
The black out effect is caused by the small exit pupil and will be the same on any scope with the same objective and power combination. To determine the exit pupil simply divide the objective lens by the power. If it is a variable power, then pick a power. IE: 6.5-20x40 Leupold would have a 2mm exit pupil on 20x.
Most 1000 yard shooters prefer a fixed 10x, so don't knock it unitl you try it. Shooting 1000 yards on 10x is like shooting 100 yards with open sights. |

I believe that most serious 1000 yard competitors use at least a 20X.

I would disagree with that statement in the "tactical" realm outside of BR.
Many are equipped with a 10x fixed.
I would say that anything above 22x is the minority. |

I was out at our range several weeks ago watching and helping keep score for a group of eight or nine guys shooting from 100, 2, 4, 6 8 and 1000 yards. Most everyone had a different scope and gun to shoot with, each one having a preference of their own. I happened to be standing behind one fellow that was shooting with a 308 caliber gun (don't remember the model) with I believe a Nikon Monarch 5.5-16.5 X 44 scope at the 1000 yard line. Several had fixed scopes and I don't belive any were over this 16.5, although one may have had a 20, but none higher and they all said DON'T get a high power scope for shooting out here. (My model 700 Remington 308 is now being set up with Badger mount, rings and X.O.T.I.C. scope) Anyway this fellow was a bit hefty and was huffing and puffing with sweat just pouring off his somewhat bald head after having just walked 1000 yards with his rifle and gear. The rangemaster let them cool off for only a bit and then they fired their three rounds. At maybe 15 seconds after the last shot was fired, a scorer stared yelling and whooping over the loudspeaker. The guy in front of me had just put 3 holes in a 1 1/4 inch group from the 1000 yard line. It was about 6 inches right and down 12 from the bullseye. Moral? As Chirs and Boomhozer said, you don't need high power out to 1000 yards.

Brady: Its still at my gunsmith's. I gave him a free hand to set it up and told him not to hurry if it meant any kind of mistake. He is doing the muzzle, trigger, barrel, and whatever else he felt it needed for 1000 yards. It should be ready by tomorrow or the next day and I will take it out and give it a try the day I get it back. I will let you know . I am also interested in the variable SS and I saw where Chris said he thinks it could be out sometime around Halloween. Please let me know when it is available. And thank you again for all your help. I appreciate it. |

I have both an SS20 and an 8.5-25 Mark 4 Illuminated mil dot and both are easy to use. The SS20 likes you to adjust the focus knob CAREFULLYand get it in focus properly and it is a great scope for shooting targets or small varmits that are not moving rapidly. You want a wider field of view for things that move. The Leupold is superb however the SS20 will focus down as close as 10 yards and when Leupold says long range they mean it will not focus closer than 50 to 75 yards. There is a huge difference in price so if its a toy for you buy the SS20 and if your life or someone else's life depends on it buy the Leupold. You will not regret purchasing either scope. I also have Luepold VXIII which I highly recommend for your specified hunting - target scope needs NOTE: reasonable $679.95 price. Or for $829.95 you can get the LEU54660 which has the M1 target knobs. (More if you want mil dot or illuminated.)

I've not seen the SS but have a couple of points to make about Leupy's - I'm not saying its problems.
They seem to be VERY fussy about eye position. I can be a problem if you use your combo in various positions (prone, bench, stood etc)
Models with good old fashioned ocular adjustment (rotating eyepicee) have great edge to edge image. I prefer this to the current "quick adjust" things.
I have however problems using Leupy's - they make my eyes hurt a bit after 20mins or so. And like everything you SHOULD try before you buy at this level of things.
I've been really dissapointed a couple of times to be "exited" about something that on paper looked perfect (i.e Zeiss 6-24*56) only to find it sorely lacking.
So far only one type of scope has been "spot on" with every example tested. S&B PM2's - and I have my name down for a 5-25*56 PM2. |

To Boomholzer,
I was referring to a target shooter, not tactical.
My 15X Unertl seemed a little light on magnification to me. I don't know how some use 24X and above when the mirage is bad but they do it, so I've been told. |
