my mate bought a new thumb hole savage 17 on the advice it was a miracle gun, faster an more powreful than a .22 magnum. sadly to my regret this was a load of *****. has any1 any experience shooting with both guns? and should the "17" be kept for rabbits and crows!!!

I have both 17HMRs and 22Mags. The 17 is an explosive round. But I'd keep it to smaller game. Its doesn't penetrate much before violently expanding unless you go with the FMJ rounds. bullet selection does make a difference. I've hit crows a fair piece out with the 17hmr and always have a feather cloud. With a 22 mag I've simply had drops with not so much of a mess. What is he trying to hunt with it?

crows, rabbits and such are no problem at anything up to 150yrds,. but foxes are the problem. some1 else told him that he should go for ballistic tips but unless its a clean head shot these foxes take the bullet even at 50-60yrds!
