Hello all, I am new here.
I recently purchased a Savage 16 .300 WSM. Im looking for an all around scope that will suit me for deer hunting as well as out west hunting our to say 300-400 yards max. I am totally out of the loop when it comes to scopes these days Currently I am looking at the Nikon BM 3-9x40 with BDC but the eye relief is only 3.6 I have a budget, I would like it to have a BDC reticle with good eye relief and glass. I would like to stay under $400 as I will still need rail and rings. I know those are some serious wants for little money, but I figure I would let the community throw some input at me. Please keep the fan boy comments out of here unless you can support it with some constructive input. TIA

WELCOME to OT.
See what you think of this combo:
Unless your set on a rail I can tell you these Talley's are highly thought of and not only at this forum. I'm not sure which ones would work for your model 16 but if your interested SWFA will make sure you get the right ones.

The forums need an edit function...
I read somewhere that you should run matte mounts on SS...any truth to that?

Not sure but you may need to have 50 posts before you can edit or post pics.
As far as matte on SS I've never heard that. I do know trying to match SS rings/bases/scopes can be frustrating in that they don't match the rifles finish.

BDC reticles vary rarely match up with any particular cartridge. Even less so when the scope's reticle is in the Second Focal plane. Target knobs, or at least a reticle based on a known unit of measure is much more accurate way to shoot.
This especially true when you are shooting at different altitudes and air densities.

I had a savage 16 300 wsm for awhile. I had a Burris fullfield II 3-9x40 with ballistic plex reticle, mounted in talley one piece lightwieght rings and that set up worked great for me.

That would be a nice setup for a WSM. Although with a 300, if you site it in for dead on at 275 to 300 you don't even need a BDC. If you are set on it though, that Zeiss is a great match.
