How many of you with the mil-dot use your scopes for critters? Although I'll mostly be shooting paper, was thinking about pulling the trigger on the SS 10 x 42 and was wondering would it suit me on varmints.

Just got my 10x SS. I think everyone should own one!
Seriously, not too many people have ever regretted purchasing a SS, friend.
Are you worried about the dots covering the animal? |

I have used mil-dot hunting and while it works on big game, the sight picture is generally to busy. I do not like it on pd's or target shooting. The cross hair subtends to much area of the target especially if dealing with a FFP on higher magnification. Historically, FFP had pretty much disappeared until a younger group of shooters started the current craze in sniper shooting (returning military shooters probably).Mil-Dot and FFP are used for a "special" purpose. Many long range shooters the, " Quigley group" still use iron sites and sticks as bipods and do quite well thank you(at least around here). While the SS is a fine scope for the sniper group it is not a good varmit scope. The Leo VX11 12x target is better as is the Nikon Monarach 6.2x20 or even for less money the newer less expensive Nikon Bushmaster in 6x18. Both paper killing and dogs tend to be more fixed distance shooting than ranging back and forth thru a large change in distance as one would use an SS type scope(current tactical dictates). When you have exhausted the dogs at a certain range, clean the guns, drive up a couple of hundred yards and start over. Any dog gun needs to be at least 1" mph (one minute of pickup hood) while a good paper gun needs to be less. As a side note, any of this doesn't need special stocks, or scopes, or calibers. Even a good 22lr will work to 200 yds with a good scope.

Thanks to all for the info.
I was kinda concerned with the mil-dot covering the vermin at long distance. |
