I know that there are millions out there BUT , I just picked up a Rem. 700 BDL .223 with a 24" barrel with a 1 in 9 twist. The gun is 24 years old and been shot 6 times. Any way I am looking for a round to shoot predators with. A good heavy accurate load. Thanks

75gr is as heavy as you will want to go unless you go to a 1:8 or a 1:7 twist and stuff that heavy probably wont fit in the magazine

On a 1:9 twist you start to give up accuracy when you start exceeding 64 grns. That's a really nice load coyote mentioned.
I used that round out of my 700 Police which almost the same as you will be using & had good luck but Black hills is not always easy to get ahold of.So I reload for most of my .223 & .556 for my RR.

For 69gr SMK's or the like, I'd start with Varget or IMR 4895.
As an aside, I have had problems with Rem BDL's in .223 feeding properly. I put a PT&G detachable magazine system in her with a AI magazine and problem solved. You can load the round longer with this system as well. |

The 1-9 twist will be good for up to 68 or 69 gr. bullets.
My choice for preditors, if you want to go on the heavy side, would be the 65 gr Sierra Game King loaded with powders like Ram Shot Tac, H335, H4895, IMR 8208, Alliant 10X. I like IMR 8208. I have used Varget with the 68 gr H hpbt and it worked well but I single loaded my ammo for a Ruger MKII SA. All this was done with CCI small rifle magnum primers or CCI 450's |

My AR and bolt gun both prefer Winchester primers, albeit slightly.

I only mentioned that as an average, every rifle is different.I load 169grn & 190 grn for my mil spec5R ,the 169 shoots just high key hole while the 190's are tac drivers.Funny thing is that my other 5R loves 168's.All my loads are with Varget & Fed GM primers with mix brass thats out of a 1:8 for both!
I never could get that .223 bolt to work in a good load or a good factory feed.No problem though with the RR ATH,that is also a 1:8,I stay at the 68 bthp great shooter.

I've had good luck on coyotes and rock chucks with consistent sub MOA accuracy from several rifles using Sierra 60 grain Varminter bullets over 25.0 grains of H 4895 assembled with Forester BR dies and Federal standard or match small rifle primers. Experimenting with bullet seating depth and neck sizing may also prove worthwhile.

My 1:9 loved the nosler custom comp 69er's, BLC2 gave slightly tighter groups than varget but was a lot dirtier too.

Roger that... I can't help on 223/5.56... never use it... CT, SVT, urimaginaryfrnd, and several others use it frequently. "Hang around" a bit and you'll get lots of info. Over the holidays is usually slow...

I like the .223. It certainly has it's limitations, but for a truck gun...in my AO...it serves me well.
To coin The Dark Lord's term, I think the .223 is a good "tweener" between my .308 and my rimfires. Low recoil, inherently accurate, cheap to load for, uses the same powder, (Varget) as my .308 load likes. |

Buying 500 to 600 bullets in bulk and at almost 300 rounds per pound of powder many varmints/preditors can be taken by the tiny .223 for relatively little expense.
Using longer bullets and fast twists the little bitty .223 does very well at 600 yards. Should those 'yotes' get bigger than 300 pounds the .308 gets deployed.
