I need to clarify something alot of new owners should know . These fellows preaching everyone should buy a leupold scope are burning my rear  !  NO  they are not the best .... are extremely overpriced .... have owned them and they break alot ..... !  Sure they have a good warranty ... you pay 8 times the value and they can afford to repair them alot !  Only the higher priced ones are good ... as are many other manufacturers with better advanced features and lower prices .  No all their components ARE NOT AMERICAN !   If you're going to spend a fortune ... buy a Zeiss . If you want high quality .. try a Mueller at affordable prices . Hakko made a darn good super clear scope and probably still does ... with high end japanese optics . They even made all the springfield armory scopes including most high end units for other brand name companies . Research ... that's what the web is for.  Of course if you want what the military uses for crystal clarity and dependability buy a LEATHERWOOD !!  Leupold has been ripping off long enough with outdated technology and misleading ads . Grandpappy days are over ... there are alot of newer better big boys on the market today .

Welcome to The OT, merc.

That's quite a statement.

This should make for some interesting reading this week when the Leupoldites log back on.

If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

I have already addressed this particular point of view while Merc was responding to someone else's purchase of a new Leupold.  Considering I still own several high end scopes with Leupold's name on them, I disagree.  Perhaps, the problem lies in the way that merc is using the scopes.  They are not going to make you any better using your scope in a way not intended for them... They do nothing for wielding your club!!  If you also used your rifle for breaking down doors or beating people up, they will all break!!!

So you don't like Leupold, I am sure that you can get nearly what you paid for them back from them, if you are so bent on getting rid of them!!!  Buy a Nikon, or another scope that you or want to try.

Hey Merc,

Check out the poll on the Varmint Scope thread.  Leupold is ranking two the last time I checked, of course a lot of the scopes are not on the list.  Burris is leading.

Hmm...

I am not a big fan of Leupold, but mostly because it is overpriced.  Otherwise, leupold makes perfectly decent scopes (just not for the money).

Leatherwood, however, seems to have a reputation for being absolute crap.  I only saw one Leatherwood and the glass was pretty bad.

Merc,

Just judging from your handle and the ill informed  rant, it would appear that you pretty much don't know what you're talking about.  I could say more but I'm trying to do my part in conserving cyberspace for you experts.

Well did i get the fur flying .... hahahaha !  Never said all leupolds were junk .... some were .  I tell it like it is ... sorry pal !   You want those lousey ones my buddies and I have go to ebay ... they'll be there.  As far as my nickname Mike .... was a military sniper in Nam and teach sniper tactics here !  Have done some armed bodyguard work on and off as well as armed courier . Am and have been a member and supporter of the Omega group for over 31 years .... probably longer than you've been out of diapers !  Leupolds are over priced and over rated .... hands down . Most are good but why pay 3-4 times as much for something tecnologically inferior and not up to modern standards ?  Buy a Zeiss if you want the best and you can get one on the web or ebay at a fantastic price . I proudly wear a fellow members crest on my hat everyday that was  executed in Angola by tribal B******s  just because he advertised his sevices for hire  in soldier of fortune magazine. Remember ... the world needs the lions to protect the sheep from wolves .... 911 proved that !  Darn ... ya don't hear all the bad mouth on the Malitia and the Mercs since the desert fleas started blowing us up and killing our children do you ?  And they love to cut off the heads of innocent old men on film .

This icon is for the so called educated ones that say what they should'nt say .... it's what we think of them ....   .  Hey Mike ... my well informed guru ... I'm willing to ill inform rant face to face pal ... !  Let me know .... !

Brady .... no I don't work there ... never read that until you linked it ... maybe someone with availibility to all brands to test is trying to tell everyone  something ...... ?  Of course you'll still have the guys that say " Got me a leupold ... they must be best .... paid an arm and a leg for it "  They could have saved that money to move out of that trailer park and fix that rusted out pickup truck instead !  And maybe buy their wife a set of teeth .     hahahaha

What was your branch, unit and MOS just for grins.  Everyone was a sniper in Vietnam.  No one was a truck driver.

As far as face to face,  I'm always up for that.  Might you be near Granbury, Texas anytime soon?

Merc,

As I said I do not know much about Leatherwood scopes, but I've heard from others that they are not exactly a cat's meow.  The one I saw was I believe a  Uni-Dial and it was not a good scope.  If military's scopes are like that, then the money I pay in taxes has gone to waste.

I am not in the military, but I have some relevant experience with optics.  I typically do not shop in Walmart and I do not care what Walmart sells.  If I hear that Walmart has a good price on something I am interested in, I'll certainly make my way over there.  I see no compelling reason to condemn a particular scope line because Walmart sells it.  As I said I do not like Leupold prices and I think tehre are better scopes for the money, but that does not make Leupold junk (Rifleman and VX-I can probably qualify as junk optically speaking, but not other Leupold scopes).  Similarly with Bushnell, their cheap scopes are nothing special, but Elite 4200 is excellent in my opinion and Elite 3200 is a very well built scope that needs slightly better glass to become more competitive.

For my money, I like Burris, Sightron and Elite 4200, but if I saw a good deal on a VX-III for example, I would not hesitate to buy it.

merceanary1947,

You indeed picked a hot topic! I don't have a lot of first hand experience with Leupold. I have owned one(vxIII 6.5-20 40mm) and still have it after many years of use. It has been an excellent scope. I agree that the upper end of the Leupold line are very high priced, but I haven't heard of many quality issues with them. As far as Wal-Mart, they also carry Nikon, which most won't consider them junk. Anyway, if you and your friends have had a lot of problems, I understand your frustration especially with the amount of money you have to give for them. I personally have heard of very few problems with them. Just my $.02. By the way, I appreciate your service for this great country!!!!

having used an ARTEL I can't imagine anyone recommending that pos.  Three hands to operate, won't hold, won't track.  And having seen the
new chinese units my opinion is even lower.

'47, where do you teach?

You might know family.  At Pleiku did you ever run into a ful bird name of Knight?  Went by the call sign, Crawler.

Hey Merc,

Rant and rave all you like, as that is what a lot of this space is for on this website.  However, don't expect a whole lot of agreement with what you are saying.

As I am today selling a Leupold Vari X III for only $100 less than I paid for it 5 years ago.  If you are going to buy another sort of scope, get one that holds it's value as well, or better than a Leupold Vari X III.  No, I am not getting rid of it, because it is junk, I just happen to need the money for something else right now, and this seemed the most painless way out of it.  After all, it is a great deal better than getting rid of a rifle.

Have you ever tried the Burris line of scopes?  I am specifically talking about their new line of XTR scopes that have the 30mm tubes, with Target turrets, and a BMD illumination feature on them.  The one I want is a 3-12X50mm and retails for around $710.00

You did not say that you bought those Leupolds from Walmart in your first post.  What did you expect sub $200.00?  Quality with the Japanese scopes like Ilya has mentioned start around $300.00- up^$$.  I don't even get excited about glass until it is up over $600.00 !!  You only get what you pay for anyway.
