Hi guys

Can anyone help me with making a sound decision on a quality 308 lower. Ive looked at cmmg, aero precision, pof, black rain, and a few others. This will be my first build and I want start off in a direction that will help eliminate any frustration, time and unnecessary money spent. Thx for your time and input in advance.

My AR10 is an Armalite and I am happy with it. And I know they sell uppers and lowers.

Also be advised that AR10s are not standardized like AR15s are. Some work together and some do not. Like a DPMS lower will not work with an Armalite upper or visa versa.

If you can swing it mega arms has a matched upper and lower set that make a great platform to build off.  Superb quality

I had an idea for an upper but this changes things, where should i be looking for a barrel(and muzzle brake)? This gun will be used for precision shooting, so, Im thinking a heavy barrel with a minimum of 20" to 24" long.
My original plan was this:https://secure.wf-api.com/www.precisionfirearms.com/m8/Hyperion%20I--308-upper-lr308-hyperion-i.html

thx

The AR 10 is a heavy platform to begin with. You need to consider the weight of your total setup and the balance. The 24" heavy barrel will put a lot of weight forward. It could make the rifle awkward to handle.

IMHO, GAP, LaRue and LMT are at the top of the game but you won't need that kind of quality for a lower,
it does need to be straight and true, the upper is a different story...get the very best you can afford.
Better understand all the of the issues involved with whatever upper you put together or you will be trouble shooting it forever.
A muzzle brake will make you very unpopular with other shooters, I know this because I have them on several rifles and was asked leave the firing line because of the side blast and I have experienced it myself when I let a buddy shoot my 7.62 PredtAR and FN SCAR 17S.
Make sure what ever you get does NOT need a special mag because if it has to come from over-seas you may be out of luck because POTUS could ban importation.
PMags in 7.62 are still available and relatively cheap.
Best of luck.

Thanks for all that info, good stuff to know. Would it be a good idea to buy a complete upper from a reputable manufacturer, or does it just depend? Since this will be my first AR-10 build, am I better off buying a complete rifle and modifying from there? I spent all day yesterday looking at different lower manufacturers and there is a lot of different feedback from a variety of experienced builders. Am I over my head? I wanted this project to be a fun and learning experience. All feedback is welcome, thank u all.

I'm doing a .308 AR build too and right now I can tell you I've narrowed it down to three choices:

  1. A Mega Arms MATEN upper/lower combo (available now)
  2. A Mega Arms Whatever-Replaces-the-MATEN-Monolithic they no longer sell (not yet available)
  3. A Seekins/Spike's Tactical upper/lower (also yet to see the light of day)

Otherwise, I'd seriously consider buying a Fulton Armory rifle. They seem to have about the most decent prices on an above-average .308 AR.

Reaction time is a factor...

Seems like almost all the used AR .308s I see for sale are of the SASS variety. As far as I'm concerned, a 24" (e.g. varmint contour) barrel is awkward even in a heavy bolt-action stock.

16" may be louder and have less velocity, but the latter can be mitigated by getting a better quality barrel. I'm not building an AR .308 to shoot out past 500...mostly 300 and under.

I am no fan of 24" peckers on an AR10, don't see the need unless it is to be a long range gun (and I'd argue an AR10 isn't the best long range platform.)  As such, my AR10s tend to be more the 18-20" variety: plenty of juice out to 600 or so, much easier to handle.

I recommended (above) Iron Ridge, that got skipped right over.  If you are looking for a top-shelf upper/lower to build, they make great stuff.  Mine is an AR10 (Armalite) variant) and I have been pleased, they do great work.  They aren't as well known, so it might not re-sell as fast as some others, but I have yet to see a nicer AR platform.

I had a look @ Iron Ridge but it looks like from their home page they're focusing on other things these days.

I hear ya, after doing more research, I think a 20" is plenty

yes it would, very nice indeed, and way out of my budget. It would have been my first choice if I could afford it. Maybe one day?
