Hello,

After spending hours of surfing online forums and scope sites, this is my first post to get some opinions.

I'm buying a Savage 93 BSEV 22 magnum and want to put a nice scope on it. I think that I've narrowed it down to a few, but am open to any other suggestions. I do not want a cheap sub $100 scope unless that is the best available for this build. I plan on primarily using the gun for killing small game up to 200 yards, but mostly under 100 yards and will also be doing some paper punching with it. I have a Vortex Viper PST on my Savage 12LRP 6.5 Creedmoor and love that gun and optic combo (may or may not be relevant).

I'm REALLY steering towards the PFI RR2-2 3-9x32 ($379 ???):
http://www.rapidreticle.com/Main/ScopeItem.aspx?ID=11&grpID=5
I'm concerned about the limited amount of information out there on this brand, but everything that I've read thus far is positive.

Also considering the Vortex Viper 3-9x40 ($299):
http://www.competitor.com/vortex-riflescopes-vpr-m-01p.html
I like Vortex scopes and know that they're reliable and the glass will be very nice for a 22wmr.

I hear a lot about Mueller and saw this 4-16x50 which looks nice ($219):
http://www.competitor.com/mueller-optics-4-16-x-50mm-adjusted-objective-tactical-riflescope.html

Or do I just go with something like the Mueller 4.5-14x40 APV that everyone seems to be raving about ($129 cheapest option):
http://www.competitor.com/mueller-optics-4-5-14x40mm-ao-apv-rifle-scope.html
This one got great reviews from 22lr users, but this is a 22wmr

I'm looking for some opinions, and I'm sure this crowd won't disappoint.

I actually did some digging around and couldn't find the RR-22-2 (3-9x32mm) by PFI available anywhere. It looks like it may be discontinued? I don't know. I'm still just as confused as when I started looking for a scope to put on this rifle. Is it really worth it to pay $300 for a nice Vortex or something else, or should I just go with a Mueller? If I go with a Mueller, is the APV the way to go, or get the slightly more expensive version?

OK, I'm not trying to be annoying by continually responding to my own post....but it does look like the PFI is still available, but only directly from the manufacturer.

/sorry

First off, welcome to the forum.  Secondly, re-read the rules ot-rules you just agreed to when you signed up.  mainly #3,  Just a heads up.
Thirdly.  I just got a savage 22mag.  Love it.  I will mainly use mine for target use and highly doubt if it sees any hunting time.  I'm looking at putting this scope on mine -  http://swfa.com/Sightron-3-9x42-SII-Riflescope-P60228.aspx,  the silver would match up well and for my use the glass will be sufficient.  My second choice and slowly thinking it may be better because of the AO is this scope from weaver - http://swfa.com/Weaver-4-16x42-Classic-V-Rifle-Scope-P585.aspx

I'm kind of steering towards the Mueller APV now. It's silver, and has all of the features that I'm looking for. (SWFA also has the best price that I've found on them)

http://swfa.com/Mueller-45-14x40-APV-Riflescope-P9766.aspx

That would leave me with enough left over money to get the Konus spotting scope since I don't have a spotting scope yet.

http://swfa.com/Konus-20-60x80-Konuspot-Spotting-Scope-P48973.aspx

Still undecided, but that is what I'm steering towards now. I wish these decisions were no-brainers. I am concerned about the Mueller's clarity at 200 yards.

There is a sightron SII on closeout in silver as well.  Only downside is no AO on it.

I went with the Mueller.

It seems like a very good scope for the money for a 22. I also went with the Weaver grand slam scope rings....and those are total JUNK. I went to mount the scope and was tightening the screws for the ring base, and the base snapped right in half. I was not over tightening, and I've mounted many scopes before. I guess I have to wait another few weeks while I return these junky Weaver rings and get some real ones.

What were you using to tighten them and how tight were you tightening them?

I was using the supplied star wrench that came with the rings, and I did not even get the first one as tight as it should be before it snapped in half. It was definitely a defect in the metal of the base part of the ring. You can tell that the metal is low quality now that I can see the inside of it. It looks like it's casted steel. The design seemed to be "less impressive" than the pictures made it out to be as well.

I called SWFA earlier today, and I'm going to exchange them for the Warne rings instead.

http://swfa.com/Warne-Maxima-Permanent-Attach-1-Rings-P9912.aspx

Those look like they are made better.

How tight do you think they should be?

Firmly snug, but obviously not maximum strength tightness. I've probably installed 10 scope rings in my lifetime and have never had this issue before. I did not even come close to tightening with all my strength.

Most rings are anywhere from 15 to 25 in-lbs and bases are anywhere from 40 to 65 in-lbs. Yes that is in-lbs and not ft-lbs. Warne bases are 25in-lbs though.

You may need to invest in a inch/lb torque driver. You will be surprised how light the ring screws need to be for proper installation. It could save a scope that cost a lot more.

This would be a good torque wrench for your warne rings.
