For those of you that have gone through the Form 4 process and related paperwork (fingerprint, photo cards etc)....

I'm locking in on a SBR and suppressor build and should have the funds together early next year. Obviously you have to fill out seperate form 4's for the sbr AND the suppressor.

My question is this:

When looking over the form 4, you need to classify the length, type and have a seriel number. I take it you have to actually purchase and have the product(s) shipped to a class 3 dealer FIRST. Then once they receive the product(s), you fill out the paperwork for the ATF, along with the $200 for the tax stamp. Then you wait for the ATF to approve it. Once that comes back, you go back to where you had the weapon sent and pick it up?

Just trying to make sure i have all my ducks in a row, as the wait time for my particular build will be roughly 4 months (as of now anyway). And then the ATF generally takes 4-6 months on top of that. So needless to say it'll take up to a year.....

Thanks as always gents.

Yes.  Order your parts first and when they arrive at the dealer then go there and they will help you fill out the paper work.  They can also answer any questions you may have.  Personally I would not even worry about the paper work until them.  I spent several months researching what I needed to do before I bought mine.  Talking to friends who had been through the process and visiting forums online.  In reality it was kind of a waste of time.  My dealer was able to tell me everything I needed to know.

After I did that, I actually spent a few weeks just going over the paper work over and over double checking everything so I did not have any mistakes.  Turned out the dealer transposed a serial number on one of the 2 forms.  Just take your time and be thorough and you should not have any issue.

After it arrives at the dealer and you get the paper work started then you have to have a background check done by the state Criminal Bureau of investigation and then they will write a letter addressed to your local sheriff or chief law enforcement officer stating there is no legal reasonwhy you cannot get the item.  Then you take that letter to your Sheriff and he has to sign off on your paper work.  He is also just signed off that he knows of no legal reason why you cannot have one.  He cannot actually stop you from getting one for personal reasons.  If he refuses to sign off then he is suppose to give you a name of someone else who has the authority to sign off like the District attorney.  Once you get that signed off, then you can send it in.  Make sure and make copies of what you send in just in case you need it.

Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

To shorten the process form a trust to purchase the class 3. If your state has family trust. Then the trust has the licensed. It takes out the background and fingerprinting. Your class 3 FFL will know if this is available in your state.

Awesome. Thanks for the info gentlemen.

I'm in the process of looking for a reputable class III dealer up in my neck of the woods. It's definitely an interesting process to investigate.

The dealer I bought from also did my fingerprints.  If you can find one that does that, it can save you a little time and hassle.

I've pretty much kicked it to the top of the firearm priority list due to Hussein Obama getting back into office. I know some think it's crazy, but i'm stocking up on ammo especially, and getting an SBR before they become banned is a priority. You are going to see an attempt on key rights protected by the 2nd Amendment somewhere over the next 4 years and with a few of the conservative justices on the Supreme Court getting up there, Obama and his socialistic loons will be able to write and pass whatever they want.

I don't trust the current President one bit, nor the direction this country is heading. It's quite sad in many ways, but that's a different topic all together.

The down side to getting licensed parts like suppressor and SBRs is then the government knows you have them.  Would not be to hard for them to come after them if they decided to ban that stuff.  I dare bet the next ban will not have a grandfather clause.  They will try to ban stuff outright this time around.

You're absolutely correct regarding the government knowing you have them. That still means they have to go through the process of "removing" them from my possession. We are not a free nation without the right to defend ourselves with the use of force. I'll be damned if i fought for this nation just to see it given up on, by weak and lazy f**kers who want a bunch of free crap. I have a wife and son, and i would give my life in a heartbeat for both in the name of freedom.  We will have none if we simply give up our 2nd Amendment rights....
