The glass below must be made in Japan rather than China (don't ask), I'm just trying to locate it.

Hunting binoculars: 10x42mm

Spotting scope: Must be in the 15-45x60mm range preferrably with a straight ocular lense.

The budget is $500 for each piece of equipment.

I hate to be so vague, but I'm headed out the door for an early Thanksgiving dinner at my Mom's.

Happy Thanksgiving.

ETA: When it comes to the binos, I'm looking for something on par with the Zen ED3's.

You might try looking for a used, discontinued, Minox HG 10x43 BR asph.

$500 is pushing the envelope, you will probably have to increase your budget for made in Japan.

The discontinued Minox HG/High Grade binoculars were manufactured in Japan.

The current APO HG's are being manufactured in Germany.

There are others which are made in Japan, but will be even more expensive.
(Pentax 10x43 DCF ED & Nikon EDG 10X42)

JGR, you'll have a lot more fun with that rig the more you use it, I have a pic of a bluebird in one of my wifes birdbaths with his head underwater and his wings up. It's hilarious. I wish I knew how to post pics.By the way that's  a nice pic and I'm glad that I was able to help.

I believe that the Sightron SIII LR series are made in Japan.  I haven't seen them but heard that they were comparable to the Zen Rays.  Are the Pentax spotting scopes still Japanese?
