We had a bad bear problem at my second home in the Adirondack Mountains this summer and fall, they have been tearing apart homes, cars, etc. looking for food. This past summer six were shot in town (Old Forge, NY) because they were breaking into restaurants and other businesses. Last year's warm winter helped most survive hibernation and this summer’s drought decimated the berry crop so they are crazy for food. Therefore, I bought a little bear protection for myself while I am out and about. I found a NIB Ruger Redhawk with a 4.2"bb in 45 Colt.

Very nice.  I have one just like it.  Nice thing about that model is you can load the powerful .45 colt loads in it.  Not just the wimpy cowboy loads like most .45 colts revo's.

Neat little hand cannon.  Should be effective on bears and unwanted intruders too

+1.  I have the 5.5" Redhawk in .41 Mag and it's my carry gun in bear country.  I load it HOT with 250gr LFN GC Beartooth Bullets over a case full of Win296.

This is the holster Coby (ckk1106) recommended I get for mine.  I really like it.

I cheaped out and got the uncle mike's nylon holster for mine.  Works okay for me.

There is a reason FBI wears their guns on the strong hand side slightly behind the hip bone.  It makes the weapon closer to your hand than it is to someone elses hand and you do not telegraph your intent as you do if you reach across to get your hand closer to the pistol in a cross draw or chest rig. Chest rigs have a place but it is as a secondary weapon while both hands are on the primary rifle. Same with knives high up on the chest that puts them by the strong hand of a person facing you - not ideal.  I prefer a Milt Sparks holster but it takes quite a while to order one in.  You should look at the Buffalo Bore ammo.

Urimaginaryfrnd,
This Ruger Redhawk revolver in a chest holster is for protection against bears while I'm in the woods! For social purposes I carry a Glock 23 in an Milt Sparks VM-2 IWB holster during the winter and during the summer I carry a  S&W 340PD in a Mika pocket holster. Regarding your ammo choice, I agree that Buffalo Bore +P is the way to go for its intended critter protection purpose.

I was referring to the "lack of waist line", to be specific.

That load is impressive. You might not reach that speed out of that short barrel, but you'll likely have a muzzle blast the size of a basketball- considerable 'shock 'n awe' factor involved. If you miss 'em, you'll intimidate 'em.

I like that bullet shape- hit 'em hard and cut a big hole all the way through. Speaking of which, a .45 260 gr. Keith- style bullet at a mere 1000 fps is known to shoot clear through a mule deer from one end to the other at 100 yards, but mulies aren't known to bite back.
That BB load is every bit the equal of a .44mag at that weight, with a thicker bullet to boot.

I'd humbly volunteer to check out that pistol for a week or two and make sure it's as neat as it looks.
