SAN DIEGO – Mac Weakley of Carlsbad caught what could be the world-record largemouth bass early Monday at Dixon Lake in Escondido.

The bass weighed 25 pounds, 1 ounce on a hand-held scale, which – if approved – would shatter the world record, the 22-pound, 4-ounce bass caught by George W. Perry at Montgomery Lake in Georgia in 1932.

The catch will have to be approved by the International Game Fish Association.

That may be a problem, however, because Weakley said he foul-hooked the fish – meaning the hook lodged below the dorsal fin on the fish's side, not in the fish's mouth.

Weakley was fishing with his longtime friends Mike Winn and Jed Dickerson. Dickerson caught a 21-pound, 11-ounce bass at the same lake in 2003.

< = src="http://www.signonsandiego.com/s/oas_x32.js"> The men believe this is the same fish that Dickerson caught almost three years ago, and which was also caught by another fisherman as a 20-pounder in 2001. They said the fish has the same identifying black dot under its right gill plate.

Weakley released the fish after taking pictures and videos of the weigh-in. But he did not take measurements of the fish, which also may be a problem when it comes to the game fish association approving it as a record catch.

They said that fish would have been worth about a million dollars had he not said that he foul hooked and got it weighed on an official scale.

UPDATE: On the big bass.

The mother of all freshwater fishing record still looms within reach. The giant California bass caught that for a moment threatened to crush the long standing world record won't claim the official title because the angler who caught it, Mac Weakley of Carlsbad CA., elected not to pursue having the fish certified by the International Game Fish Association.

Mr Weakley chose to release the fish because he didn't want to kill it, and because he didn't think IGFA would certify it as a world record dut to the fact it had been foul hooked. He later learned that the automatic IGFA disqualification applies only to fish that are intentionally foul hooked. Weakley and everyone involved with the catch claims the bass was no foul hooked on purpose. The big bass was reportedly huddled around a spawning bed in about 12 feet of water. A smaller male bass was nearby. The anglers took turns casting to the bigger fish.

Weakley happenend to be the one holding the rod when the bite came. He felt a thump and jerked. Unfortunately, the hook buried in the bass's back, just beneath the dorsal fin....
