742 is probably fine and has served many people well. The scope, on the other hand, is a toss up depending on when it was made, etc. If you don't want to put a lot of money in that setup get a Bushnell 3200 or similar. A Weaver V3 can be had for around $150 and would complement that rifle well. Not for beanfields but neither is the rifle. Semi-auto like that seems more like a quick off-hand rifle for the thick stuff, which is a perfect application for the Weaver.

There's your problem right there!! It wears a Tasco; I had a simular problem on my 30-30 many years ago, but my rifle wore a Simmons. Upgraded the scope to a Leupold for the time being and never had any more problems from it. It now sports a Redfield Revolution and it's a sweet shooter.

Welcome to Optics Talk.
Well, could be loose action screws, base/cap screws, or the scope may be a goner. Is there any way you can switch the scope out with a proven one you have, or maybe borrow a friends?

I have nothing against the 742 for a good deer rifle. I would doubt the Tasco much sooner. A this time with the closeout on the Sightron 2.5-10 S-1 for $99 would be hard to beat and is a lot better scope than the Tasco.
