    Posted: March/18/2006 at 04:57
Hi, I have recently purchased a Sako AV in 338 WM. I am trying to find a set of mounts for it. I will most likely be mounting a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8X36 on it and would like to have it as low as possible. I have been told that for the price of the Sako OptiLock rings I could get something better like Conetrol's. This will be my first Sako so I am not familiar with their mounting system. What do you guys suggest? If you could be as specific as possible it would help (ie model numbers etc). Thanks in advance for the help.

I personally love Conetrol mounts.

They are a bitch to install, but are great hunting rings. Rock solid!!

That said, Talleys are good to go as well. Very good system. No stainless though, just blued.

Conetrol will get a stainless pair if you want.

I used Leupold Ring mounts on a .300 Win mag successfully. No problems. Cheap to boot!!

The Opti's blow!!

I am trying to decide between the Talley's and Conetrols. I want them in matte for a Sako AV in 338 WM. Are the Conetrols really that hard to install? It bothers me that they want 50% more just to get matte rings.

I have a Win Model 70 in 375H&H that I was going to put the Quick detach Talleys on so maybe I will just use them on both.

Do you have any advice on why I should go with one over the other? I was looking at the Detachable Talley's (w/ the screw) for the 338 because the rifle will be scoped the majority of the time but I want to be able to take off the scope if something malfunctions to use irons. Are the Conetrols easy to take off if needed?

Do you really think the Conetrols are more solid then the Talley's?

I was just looking at the Talley bases that fit sako's. It says that one base is for Sako I, II, III and the other is for Sako IV and V. How can I find out which one fits on my AV?

Conetrols are a classic "old school" style hunting set up.

They are just kind of hinky to set up, that's all. No degree in rocket science required.

If you want to go with a good QD set up, then look no further than the Talleys.

I went with the Screw Locs, not the levers, and they worked great!!

I would say your .338 is a V.

Call or email Talley. You can buy Talleys here at SWFA!
